Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola received another strong start from senior
Nick Turner and backed it up with just enough offense as the Eagles snapped The Master's 11-game GSAC win streak with a 5-3 victory at Eagles Diamond on Friday.
The Eagles improve to 17-12 with their third win in their last four games, moving to 9-10 in GSAC play. The Mustangs fall to 21-8 and to 14-5 in the conference having lost three of four against Biola this season.
Turner, making his first start since earning GSAC Pitcher of the Week honors last week, allowing just two earned runs on five hits over 7-1/3 innings, striking out five and walking one. Garrett Picha allowed one hit over the final 1-2/3 innings to earn his sixth save.
Biola opened the game with a strong rally against one of the GSAC's top pitchers in A.J. Work, who had allowed just nine earned runs in 49 innings pitched. However, the Eagles got to him for three runs in the first and one in the second.
Paul Slater got things going with a double off the center field fence to lead off the bottom of the first and Vince Lawrence moved him to third on a fly out. Benji Sutherland then drove Slater home with a single through the right-side to get Biola on the board.
After a walk to Sam Thorne, Michael Annunziata singled through the left side to bring home Sutherland. Luke Klocek was hit by a pitch to lead the bases and an infield single by Nick Oddo made it a 3-0 game. However, a double play ended the inning with the bases still loaded.
The Eagles added another in the second as Slater hit a one-out double down the left field line. He the was driven in again by Sutherland, giving Biola a 4-0 lead.
Biola would tack on another run in the fourth. Slater drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Vince Lawrence. After a fielder's choice retired Slater at third, Thorne came through with a clutch single to right to bring home Lawrence.
The Master's got on the board with a two-run home run by Spencer Downs in the top of the sixth and added an unearned run in the seventh to cut the lead to two at 5-3. But the Mustangs had just one hit the rest of the way as the Eagles held on for the win.
Slater went 2-for-3 with two runs, collecting to doubles to give him 15 on the season--the most in the NAIA thus far.
Sutherland added two hits with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Eagles and Mustangs close out the three-game GSAC series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Eagles Diamond.
