Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola scored early and held on late to take the second game of a GSAC doubleheader against San Diego Christian 4-3 after falling 9-1 in the first game at Eagles Diamond on Monday.
The Eagles improve to 16-12 on the season and move to 8-10 in conference play while the Hawks finish the day at 17-10 and are tied with Biola at 8-10 in GSAC play.
Biola got a strong start in game two from freshman Trevor Oaks, who allowed three runs on three hits over 6-2/3 innings, striking out nine batter. He allowed just one hit over the first five innings and ran out of steam one out away from a complete game.
The Eagles had base runners in nearly every inning in game two and got on the board in the third inning. With one out, Paul Slater singled up the middle and moved to second on a walk to Vince Lawrence. Benji Sutherland loaded the bases with a single to right and Sam Thorne brought home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly. Michael Annunziate followed with a single to make it 2-0 Biola.
San Diego Christian broke the no-hit bid with a lead-off triple by Chad Erickson to start the fourth inning and Taylor Eichhorst hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Eagles got the run back in the fourth, taking advantage of an error to make it 3-1. However, despite having the bases loaded with no one out, could not get any more in the frame.
Biola added what proved to be a key issuance run in the sixth inning. Luke Klocek singled up the middle to start the inning and pinch runner Bryan Castelli was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Paul Slater then singled him home to make it 4-1.
Oaks got the first two outs in the seventh inning with ease, but walked a batter, gave up a single and walked another batter to load the bases. Erick Allen came on in relief and allowed a two-run single before ending the game with a line-out.
Slater finished the game going 3-for-4 while Kiocek went 2-for-3 in the contest.
Biola struggled in the first game, both offensively and from the mound.
In the San Diego Christian second, the Hawks got a run with an RBI ground out to take the early lead. Biola answered back, taking advantage of a Hawks error to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
In the fifth inning, Biola got the first two outs of the inning with out much of a problem, but a catcher's interference call extended the inning and wound up costing Biola four unearned runs. San Diego Christian would take a 5-1 lead and chase Eagles' starter Josh Staumont after just 4-2/3 innings.
The Hawks tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning on four hits and three walks to blow the gas open. San Diego Christian would go on to win 9-1 behind a strong showing from Nick Greene, who allowed one unearned run on five hits over eight innings.
Lawrence and Sutherland each collected two hits to pace the Biola offense in the second game.
Biola returns to action on Friday, starting the second-half of conference play with a three-game series against the top team in the GSAC: The Master's College (21-7, 14-4 GSAC). The series was originally scheduled to be played in Santa Clarita, but the teams switched locations due to rain earlier in the year. Biola took two of three at The Master's to open GSAC play earlier this year including winning one with a combined no-hitter. Friday's game begins at 3:00 p.m.
