Biola Crushed 12-3 in Series Opener at Concordia

Paul Slater
Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Freshman pitcher Trevor Oaks had his worst start of his young career, allowing 10 runs over four innings as Biola lost the first game of a three-game GSAC series against No. 11 Concordia, falling 12-3 on Friday afternoon.

Biola suffered its second loss of the week and drops to 12-7 on the year and to 5-5 in conference action while Concordia, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll, moves to 10-7 and to 6-4 in GSAC action.

Concordia opened the game strong with three runs in the top of the first inning. Concordia recorded four singles in the first inning to open a 3-0 lead. After adding an unearned run in the second to take a 4-0 lead.

Biola closed the gap with three runs in the top of the fourth. Paul Slater opened the inning with a triple to center and came around to score on a single by Luke Klocek. Two outs later, Vince Lawrence kept the inning going with a single up the middle and both runners came around to score on a double by Michael Annunziata to make it 4-3.

That would be it for Biola and Concordia responded with a two-spot to stretch the lead back to three after four innings.

The wheels came on in the fifth inning as Concordia pulled away with a six-run inning. Oaks allowed four-straight hits to open the inning and was replaced.

The Biola offense could muster little offense outside of the fourth inning, struggling against Concordia starter Cole Swanson, who allowed just three runs on six hits over eight innings. Josh Bagwell struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.

Oaks went four innings, allowing 10 runs--eight earned--on 12 hits while striking out three. Sage Poland closed out the fifth and Sean Ruthfuss allowed just two hits over three shutout innings.

Slater had three of Biola's six hits in the game including the triple to open the fourth.

The two teams close out the three-game series with a doubleheader at Concordia on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
