Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- From the start it seemed as if it were a game Biola should not have even come close in, as they trailed big to No. 24 California Maritime Academy. Some second half adjustments and big shots down the stretch made it a close game, and solid performance for the Eagles, despite the 10-point loss.
Â
BU struggled often early, missing shots and opportunities as Cal Maritime mounted a 15-point lead in the first half.
Â
The Eagles shot just 30 percent from the floor and missed all seven of their three-point attempts in one of the toughest halves they played all season. The only Eagle to shoot 50 percent or better in the first 20 minutes was
Mike Kurtz, who went 2-4 from the floor to garner five first half points.
Pierre Zook, who turned it around and had a solid game, did not make a single shot through 20 minutes.
Â
Dominique Barnes and Anthony Simi of CSUM torched Biola in the first frame, combining for 17 of the Keelhaulers 37 points in the frame.
Â
So, down fifteen points and much in need of a spark, the Eagles came out of the locker room and found themselves backpedaling immediately out of the gate. Six missed shots in the first five minutes helped the Keelhaulers extend their lead to their game-high 21-point advantage at 45-24.
Â
Then, the Eagles caught fire, soaring through a 17-3 run that helped them drop their defecit all the way down to just seven points at just under the 10-minute mark.
Dakari Archer was the little engine that could during that run as he single-handedly scored nine of the Eagles' 17 points, most via free throw.
Â
He led the team with a game-high and season-high 20-point performance. It was his highest scoring output since he dropped 19 in the season-opener.
Â
In addition to the points scored, Archer contributed an uncharacteristic seven rebounds, six of them on defense. The freshman guard from Downey, Calif. made 14-16 free throws.
Â
Cal Maritime held off, despite being outscored 36-31 in the second half, and moved to 10-3 on the season while Biola fell to 6-4, losing their first in the last six games.
Â
A key was the Keelhaulers ability to play physical and quick close to the hoop, they outscored Biola in the paint 34-16. As is customary, BU won the battle of the boards, 31-27, but it didn't help them enough to make up the final difference.
Â
The Eagles return to the court at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday against Bethesda.
