Eagles Stage A Comeback Over The Sagehens

Biola came back from a seven point deficit with six minutes to play to beat Pomona-Pitzer.

The crowd was loud and proud on Tuesday as Biola came from behind to get their first home win of the season.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It did not look like or feel like a win throughout 37 minutes of play, but in the final three minutes the Eagles came up big and sealed a 73-70 win over Pomona-Pitzer inside Chase Gym on Tuesday night.

Dakari Archer, Andre Murillo and Pierre Zook lit up the scoreboard, combining for 54 of Biola's 73 points. Zook was on fire throughout the game, carrying the Eagles' offense with 11 points in the first half, and continuing the solid shooting in the final frame.

Archer and Murillo stepped up when it mattered most and combined to give Biola 17 points in the final seven minutes played.

"I was pleased with how well we played down the stretch," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "We were behind for most of the game, but we came out and played our best basketball in the final few minutes."

The Eagles' chances of victory were looking very bleak when they found themselves down by seven with just over six minutes to play. Then, suddenly, it was as if something clicked and Biola's defense and post offense came to life.

Archer and Murillo made back-to-back layups to put BU within three, and then a missed shot and huge rebound by Christian Misi setup a fastbreak for the Eagles and another big layup from Murillo, extending the Eagles' run to 6-0.

The Sagehens made back-to-back shots and then Murillo got in on the scoring with yet another layup before Archer took, and made, the biggest shot of the night, a three-pointer that put Biola ahead.

"As a team we did some really great things," said Holmquist. "We were especially strong at the end of the game, and that helped get us a win that we really needed."

It was a foulfest from the made three-pointer up until the end of the game, when, with one second to play, a big block by Mike Kurtz sealed the Eagles' second win of the season.

Kurtz had two blocks and a few rebounds on the night, but it was Murillo's 14 rebounds and Christian Misi's eight that led Biola to a 35-28 win in the battle of the boards.

Misi was a big presence on the floor in tonight's game, going 4-5 from the field and tacking on all those boards in just 20 minutes on the court.

"Christian played a really productive game tonight," said Holmquist. "He is one of the hardest working players, and he gave us a great 20 minutes tonight."

Biola saw their percentages go way up from their season averages tonight, shooting 54 percent from the floor, 60 percent from the line and 55 percent from behind the arc.

The Sagehens had four players reach double-digits, including 18 from Jake Klewer. They saw the loss come partially as a result of too many missed three-point shots, dropping to 1-1 after shooting just 28 percent off of 25 three-point attempts.

Biola's next matchup is sure to be a good one, as they travel to Azusa, Calif. this Saturday to square off with the Cougars of Azusa Pacific. Tickets to this big rivalry game can be purchased at this link.
