Biola and The Master's Split 2-0 Games to Open GSAC Schedule

Nick Turner
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- The rain may have delayed the start of the 2013 GSAC schedule, but the first games between Biola and The Master's were worth the wait as the teams exchanged 2-0 wins, splitting the doubleheader in Santa Clarita on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams finish the day with records of 4-1 overall and 1-1 in GSAC play. The Mustangs won the first game 2-0 while the Eagles rallied back and took game two 2-0 in seven innings. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Biola, but was moved to Santa Clarita and The Master's turf field instead. The teams will play a doubleheader in La Mirada on March 16.

Pitching was the story of the day as Biola's four pitchers and The Master's five pitchers confounded the bats of their high-scoring opponent's.

Senior Nick Turner took the hill in game two for the Eagles, going 5-1/3 scoreless innings, scattering six hits and striking out six to earn his first win of the season. Turner's ERA remains at 0.00 through his first two appearances, spanning 9-1/3 innings.

Javier Martinez come on in relief, recording the final two outs of the sixth and retiring the side in the seventh after a leadoff walk to earn his first save. He would finish with three strikeouts in 1-2/3 innings and now has eight in 4-2/3 innings pitched this season.

After failing to score through the first nine innings of the doubleheader, the Eagles got on the board early with a run in the first inning. Leadoff batter Paul Slater drew a walk to open the game. With one out, he moved all the way to third on a failed pick off and throwing error on the pitcher. Sutherland then made him pay with a single to third to bring home the run.

Biola would not get another runner on base until the fourth as one-out singles by Nick Oddo and Sam Thorne put two on. But The Master's starter Tyler Elrod would get out of the jam with a fly out and ground out to end the threat.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning as Michael Annunziata drew a lead-off walk and was sacrificed to second by David McNeill. One out later, Slater came through with a clutch two-out single to right-center to bring home Annunziata to make it 2-0.

Martinez struggled to find the strike zone at the start of the seventh inning, walking the leadoff batter Caleb Halverson on four-straight pitchers. He would fall behind 3-0 on Jonathan Popadics, but came right back with three-straight strikes for the first out. After a fly out, Martinez closed out the game with a four-pitch strikeout.

Biola managed just four hits in the game, but two of them drove in runs to provide the cushion. The same could not be said in the first game.

The Eagles would record six hits in game one and had two more batters reach on walks, but could not come up with a clutch hit. Instead, four double plays would prove to be Biola's undoing.

Freshman Trevor Oaks had another strong start, but he could not get his first collegiate win. Oaks allowed just two runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out seven and walking just one. However, the offense could help him out.

The Mustangs got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Sam Robison led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a one-out walk by Popadics. After Oaks got a big strikeout, Spencer Downs drilled an 0-1 pitch to right-centerfield to bring home the first run of the game.

The Master's added another run in the fifth with Robison again getting the rally going with a leadoff single. Halverson laid down a bunt to move him over, but it was misplayed by Oaks and everyone was safe. Popadics then drove home the second run of the game with an infield single. Oaks would strike out the next two batters but put himself in a jam after a wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet. But Oaks got out of trouble with a come backer to the mound.

Oaks wound out retiring the final nine batters he faced, giving way to Will Emerson in the eighth. Emerson would get two pop outs and a strikeout to retire the side in order.

Biola had plenty of chances to get a run, starting in the second inning. Benji Sutherland and Sam Thorne led off the frame with singles to get things going, but a sacrifice bunt attempt ended up being an easy 1-5 putout at third. McNeill then hit a shot but right to the short stop, who started an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Biola and The Master's close out the amended three-game series on Monday as the Eagles host the Mustangs on Monday in La Mirada beginning at 2:00 p.m.
