Turner Pitches Biola Past Westmont, 4-2

Nick Turner
Box Score AZUSA, Calif. --- Nick Turner allowed two runs on six hits and struck out eight over eight innings while Mike Lopez provided a key two-out, two-run single in the third as Biola defeated Westmont College 4-2 to avoid elimination and move on in the GSAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Azusa Pacific University.

The Eagles improve to 26-26 and stay alive in the GSAC Tournament. Biola faces No. 4 ranked and the tournament's top seed Azusa Pacific University in an elimination game on Thursday at 2:15 p.m. The winner moves into the championship series, needing two wins on Friday to take the tournament title. The Warriors fall to 23-26-1 and face The Master's College in the other elimination game on Thursday.

Turner was the story for Biola on the afternoon, working fast and keeping the Warriors off their toes the entire game. His one mistake came in the fouth inning where he allowed a two-run home run to Timothy Leary, who connected on his 17th of the season to cut the lead to 4-2. But Turner allowed just one more hit the rest of the way including recording 12-straight outs to finish the eighth inning with the lead intact.

The offense came early again for Biola. The Eagles tallied two runs in the first inning to get an early lead. Benji Sutherland opened the bottom of the first with a double to right and moved to third on a bunt single by Johnny Farrington. Vinnie Fayard then drove in Sutherland with a ground out, which retired Farrington at second. Fayard would move all the way around to third on a balk and a wild pitch, and came in to score two batters later on another RBI ground out, this time by Mac Sullivan.

In the third, the Eagles would add two more which proved to be the difference in the game. Fayard and Vinnie Fages led off the inning with singles and moved to second and third on a groundout by Sullivan. After an infield popup made it two outs, Lopez came through in the clutch situation with a single to right to plate the pair and make it 4-0.

Biola had a couple of chances to add on to the lead including having the first two batters reach in the sixth. However, Westmont starter Ryan Sullivan got a pop out and a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

Sullivan would take the loss in the game, allowing four runs on nine hits over seven innings.

For Turner, the game served as a measure of revenge against the Warriors, who scored nine runs on 12 hits over 3-1/3 innings against the righty when the teams met in La Mirada one month ago. In that game--a 14-6 Westmont victory--Leary touched Turner up for two home runs including a three-run shot which chased him from the game.

Biola will need another solid second-chance start to advance one more day in the GSAC Tournament as junior Jeff Grijalva heads to the hil again against Azusa Pacific. Grijalva had his worst start of the season when he last pitched at Azusa Pacific, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits over 1-2/3 innings as Biola lost 16-7 to the Cougars on Feb. 23. Since then, Grijalva has been solid, allowing more than two earned runs twice in eight starts, posting an overall record of 6-2 with a 4.43 ERA.
