Box Score 2 EL CAJON, Calif. --- Biola closed out the regular season with a split at San Diego Christian College, winning the first game 12-2 thanks to 21 hits, but falling 12-6 in game two on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles take three of our four games in their final GSAC series to wrap up the regular season with a 25-25 mark and an 18-14 conference mark. Oddly, Biola finished an even 12-12 at home, 12-12 on the road and 1-1 in neutral-site games. The Hawks wrap up the year with a 19-32 mark and an 11-21 conference record.
Biola wrapped up third place in the GSAC standings and the third seed in the upcoming GSAC Tournament earlier in the week. The Eagles open against The Master's College on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Azusa Pacific.
Biola senior Kevin Ryan made the most of his final regular-season start, pitching seven strong innings in game one. Ryan allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out five to earn the win and improve to 3-4 on the season.
Despite winning by 10, Biola did not take a comfortable lead until late in the game. However, the Eagles did pound out 21 hits including four each by Mac Sullivan and Benji Sutherland. Sullivan also contributed a home run, his fourth of the season.
Biola got on the board early with a run in the first inning. Sutherland led off the game with a single to left. After stealing second, he was moved to third on a single by Johnny Farrington. Drake Fages then brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center.
The score would remain 1-0 until the fourth when Biola picked up an unearned run. Mike Lopez single to left and reached second on a wild pitch. After moving to third on an infield single by Sullivan, he would score on a fielding error by the Hawks to make it 2-0.
San Diego Christian got that run back in the bottom of the inning, also taking advantage of an error to get within one run.
Biola would stretch the lead back to two. Sutherland would hit a ground rule double to right to lead off the frame. Farrington sacrificed him to third with his 15th sacrifice bunt of the year and came around to score on a double down the left-field line by Fages.
The Eagles added on in the sixth as Sutherland and Farrington recorded back-to-back two-out singles to make it 5-1.
Sullivan added two more with a two-run home run to right in the seventh inning.
After San Diego Christian scored a run in the seventh, Biola blew the game open with five runs in the eighth. With one out and the bases loaded, Nick Covyeau and Sage Poland each collected RBI-singles. After a strikeout, Michael Annunziata cleared the bases with a triple to left center to cap the scoring.
Biola rested many of its starters in the second game and went with a group of relievers on the mound.
The Hawks took advantage with a run in the first, then added three unearned runs in the third inning to go up 4-0.
Biola got on the board in the fourth inning as James Petrilli hit his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot over the right-field fence to make it 4-3.
The score would stay that way until the sixth as San Diego Christian got one more run, but left the bases loaded and Biola stayed within two. But the Hawks would tack on three more in the seventh to go up 8-3.
The Eagles would close the gap to two again, matching the three runs with three of their own in the top of the eighth. Paul Slater led off by getting hit by a pitch and Poland singled through the right side to put two on. Covyeau then plated one with a sacrifice fly. Three batters later, David McNeill and pinch-hitter Mac Sullican then hit run-scoring singles to make it 8-6.
But that would be as close as Biola would get and San Diego Christian would score four in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a three-run home run by Victor Martinez to account for the final score.
Biola now heads to the postseason, opening with the GSAC Tournament which begins Tuesday at Azusa Pacific. The Cougars earned the No. 1 seed with Concordia taking the No. 2 spot.
