Biola Sweeps San Diego Christian

Nick Turner
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Drake Fages had two home runs and five RBIs on game one while Nick Turner retired the final 19 batters of game two as Biola swept a GSAC doubleheader against San Diego Christian College on Friday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.

The Eagles improve to 24-24 overall with their seventh win in their last nine games, and officially wrap up third place in the GSAC with a 17-13 record. The Hawks fall to 18-31 and have lost nine of 10 games, falling to 10-20 in conference play.

Fages continued his hot hitting of late with two home runs in the first game, driving in five and scoring twice. He finished the doubleheader by going 5-for-6 with those two homers, a triple, six RBIs, and three runs scored. With his pair of home runs in the first game, he has now hit six home runs in his last six games including a homer in five-straight games which ended in game two.

In game one, Fages provided the bulk off the offense with Turner's pitching proving to be the story of game two. Turner allowed just one run on three hits in a complete-game, seven-inning victory.

In the first game, the offense got going in the third inning. Mike Lopez led off the frame with a single and pinch runner Tanner Swire stole second. After two strikeouts and a walk, Vinnie Fayard single to right to score Swire with the first run of the game. Fages then followed by depositing the first pitch he saw over the left-centerfield fence for a three-run home run to make it 4-0.

In the fifth, Johnny Farrington opened the inning with a double down the left-field line. Two batters later, Fages connected on his second home run of the game, belting a two-run shot to left to make it a 6-0 game.

Meanwhile, Biola starter Jeff Grijalva was cruising through five, allowing just four hits and recording a pair of strikeouts. However, he ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth, walking the leadoff man who would come around to score on a one-out double.

In the seventh, a two-out walk again got him in trouble as a stolen base and a single would make it a 6-2 game and end Grijalva's day. Alex Bos came on and got the final out of the inning without even throwing a pitch, picking off the runner on first with a nice move.

He and J.T. Mickelson would keep the Hawks off the board the rest of the way as Mickelson earned his fifth save of the year.

In game two, Biola fell behind early as San Diego Christian got a run with a two-out, first-inning rally. With two out, Turner allowed a single, hit a batter and then another single to bring home the first run of the game. He would allow another single, but that would be the final hit of the game for the Hawks as Turner was able to get a fly out to end the inning.

He would then close out the game with six perfect innings including striking out five of the seven batters including all three in the seventh inning to earn the win. He improves to 4-5 on the season.

The offense in the game came from Vinnie Fayard, who along with Fages were among the seven seniors playing in their final home games for Biola.

In the first inning, a one-out single by Mac Sullivan tied the game at 1-1. The Eagles picked up right where they left off in the second, scoring three times--all of the runs being unearned runs. After a two-out error extended the inning, Fayard would make SDCC pay, driving in a pair of runs with a single through the left-side.

The score would remain 4-0 until the sixth when the Eagles added two more. With one out and a runner on second, Fages drove a ball down the right field line for what looked like a routine double. However, the ball ricocheted off the fence down the line and shot back toward center field. It looked like he might extend his home run streak with an inside-the-park homer, but was held at third after the right-fielder recovered and chased down the ball.

He would come around to score soon, though, as Fayard singled to drive him in and cap the scoring.

Fayard went 2-for-3 in his final game at Biola, driving in three runs and also drawing a walk. Fages also was 2-for-3 with a runs scored and RBI.

Biola and San Diego Christian wrap up the four-game series on Saturday in El Cajon with two nine-inning games beginning at 11:00 a.m.
