Vinnie Fayard collected five hits in nine at-bats on Monday afternoon to help Biola to a GSAC split of a doubleheader at Eagles Diamond as the Eagles took game one 8-1 before falling 8-5 in game two.
The Eagles move to 19-23 on the season and to 12-12 in GSAC play, holding firm in fourth place in the conference standings. The Sunbirds are now 23-21, 12-16 in conference play, earning just their third road win of the season in game two.
Turner had his best outing of the season, working fast and recording seven strikeouts over seven shutout innings, scattering four hits to improve to 3-4 on the season. He threw 89 pitches with 65 going for strikes and just 24 balls
Biola jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first and added another in the second to open up a 4-0 advantage.
With one out, Johnny Farrington and Vinnie Fayard singled to open the inning, both advancing on a throwing error by the shortstop. After a walk to load the bases, Nick Covyeau singled home the first run. One out later, Wesley Cottier drove home a pair with a single through the right-side to give Biola a 3-0 lead after one.
In the second, Sutherland singled with one our and came around to score on a double by Vinnie Fayard to go up 4-0.
The score would remain the same over the next four innings until Biola broke the game open with a four-spot in the sixth. A hit by pitch and two walks would load the bases for the Eagles with two out. Sutherland than drove a line shot over the head of the center fielder to clear the bases and five Biola a 7-0 lead. Sutherland would come around to score on a single by Farrington to make it 8-0.
The Sunbirds would get one unearned run off reliever Karl Stuck in the eighth, but a trio of Biola pitchers would allow just five hits in the contest.
Game two saw Fresno Pacific strike first with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Biola would get that back in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of back-to-back walks to open the inning with Mike Lopez driving in the game-tying run with a single.
The Sunbirds went back up with two runs in the top of the third with an RBI-triple by Karlan Andrews, who would steal home on a delayed steal to make it a 3-1 game.
Biola managed to get one run back in the bottom of the frame as Fayard connected on his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to dead centerfield.
The Eagles would then take the lead with a three-run bottom of the fourth, capped by a two-out, two-run single by Drake Fages with another run coming around on an error by the center fielder. The rally gave Biola a 5-3 lead, though it proved to be short-lived lead.
Fresno would go back on top with three runs in the top of the fifth as the first four batters reached base with three scoring to chase Biola starter Kevin Ryan. Erick Allen would come on and limit the damage by retiring the next three hitters on fly outs to end the inning.
Fresno Pacific would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh and added another in the top of the ninth thanks to a solo home run by Alec Mehrten. Michael Rivera would pitch the final two innings to record his sixth save of the season.
Ryan suffered the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year while Matt Mazzoni earned the win to improve to 4-2.
Biola opens a four-game GSAC series against Point Loma Nazarene on Thursday, traveling to San Diego for a 3:00 p.m. game.
