Biola Splits GSAC Twinbill at Fresno Pacific Behind Strong Pitching

Mike Lopez
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRESNO, Calif. --- On a day when runs were tough to come by, Biola found scored four in a pivotal sixth inning to take the second game of a GSAC doubleheader against Fresno Pacific University 6-2 after falling 1-0 in the opener in Fresno on Thursday.

The Eagles snap a six-game losing streak with the game-two victory and move to 18-22 on the season and to 11-11 in GSAC play. The Sunbirds finish the day at 22-20, 11-15 in the conference. Thursday's single game was turned into a doubleheader due to anticipated rain in the Central Valley on Friday.

Biola once again received great starts from its No. 1 and No. 2 pitchers. Chris Baek suffered the hard-luck loss in game one despite allowing just one run on eight hits over 8-2/3 innings pitched. He did manage to lower his ERA to a team-best 2.70, but fell to 4-4 on the season.

In the second game, Jeff Grijalva was the recipient of some run support and picked up the win, allowing just two runs on two hits over five-plus innings. He would give way to J.T. Mickelson, who allowed just one hit over the final two innings, retiring six-straight to end the game.

Biola got its first run early in the seven-inning second game, scoring once in the first inning to take the early lead. Benji Sutherland drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on an infield ground out. Drake Fages came through with a clutch single to make it 1-0.

The score would remain the same until the sixth inning when the Eagles finally got the offense going. Vinnie Fayard led off the frame with a double to left and came around to score on a single by Fages to give Biola a 2-0 lead. A single by Wesley Cottier and an error on a fly ball to right by Mac Sullivan loaded the bases with no one out.

Mike Lopez then broke the game open with a clutch single to center, driving home two and doubling the Biola lead. Paul Slater moved Lopez and Sullivan up a base with a sacrifice bunt and Michael Annuniziata was walked to re-load the bases. Sutherland then earned an RBI with a free pass to drive home Sullivan with the sixth run of the game.

Fresno Pacific got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Grijalva walked the lead-off batter and hit the next batter before another walk loaded the bases. Mickelson then came on in relief and allowed a single to right to score two, but limited the damage with a strikeout and two infield pop outs.

Mickelson would then retire the side in order in the seventh to preserve the win for Grijalva. The pair limited Fresno Pacific to just three hits in the game--all three singles.

Lopez was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice to go along with his two RBIs in the game. Fages went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in while Cottier also collected two hits in four at-bats.

Game one was a tough one for the Eagles, who were locked in a pitcher's duel with Fresno Pacific's top starter: Derek Benny.

Biola managed just five hits in the contest, but put a runner in scoring position in five of the nine innings. However, the Eagles could not get the clutch hit they needed.

The best chance came in the seventh. Cottier pinch hit and led off the frame with a walk. One out later, Mike Lopez singled up the middle to put two on with one out. But a line-drive to right field off the bat of Paul Slater was snared on a great play and led to a double play as pinch-runner Sage Poland was caught off second.

The winning run scored in the ninth inning and came with just one hit. That was off the bat of lead-off hitter Alec Mehrten, who opened the door with a hit to left. After a sacrifice moved the pinch-runner Connor Monis to second, Baek intentionally walked the next hitter to set up the double-play chance.

He would get a big second out with a strikeout, but a wild pitch on the final strike allowed the base runners to advance 90 feet. After another intentional walk loaded the bases, Baek could not re-connect with the strike zone and ended up walking in the winning run on four pitches.

Baek faced real trouble just twice in the game, the biggest threat coming in the first when back-to-back two-out singles put runners at second and third. But Baek worked out of the jam with a fly out. He would not allow another Sunbird to reach third base until the ninth inning. That was also the first inning in which the leadoff batter for Fresno Pacific reached base.

The Eagles remain in fourth-place in the GSAC after the twinbill at 11-11, two games back of The Master's College and six back of second-place Concordia. Fresno Pacific is two games behind Biola at 11-15, one up on Westmont at 10-14.

Biola and Fresno Pacific close out the four-game GSAC series with another doubleheader on Saturday in La Mirada. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
