Biola Looks For First GSAC Tournament Title Tonight at Concordia

Given Kalipinde's monster block near the end of the game sealed Biola's win over Concordia earlier this year
IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola looks to close out its impressive second-half of the season with its first GSAC Tournament Title. However, it will not be an easy task as the road to the championship goes through No. 4 Concordia and the CU Arena. The championship game tips off at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the CU Arena in Irvine.

Biola enters the contest as one of the hottest teams in the NAIA and the hottest team in the GSAC, winning 12 of its last 13 games and currently boasts a 24-8 overall record. The Eagles moved into the NAIA Top 25 last week for the first time in months, falling into the No. 19 spot. En route to the championships, Biola--the No. 3 seed in the GSAC Tournament--has defeated No. 6 The Master's and No. 2 Point Loma Nazarene.

Concordia is the second-hottest team in the tournament field having won 11 of its last 13 games with its lone losses in the second half of the season coming to Biola and at San Diego Christian College. Concordia has been in the NAIA Top 10 all season including a short stint at No. 1 and currently is tied at No. 4.

Concordia has just six losses on the season, though two of those have come against Biola. Biola beat then No. 1- Concordia 83-68 in a game that was a lot closer than the final score would indicate when the teams met in January in La Mirada. That was one of the Eagles' two wins over a seven-game stretch midway through the year. Biola also stunned Concordia again in with a 75-62 victory in Irvine in February.

The victory at the CU Arena was a big one for Biola, which hadn't won at Concordia since the 2005-06 season. That year, Biola escaped with an 83-81 overtime win to sweep the season series as well. In its previous 11 trips to the CU Arena, Biola is 2-9 dating back to the 2002-03 season.

Both teams have secured an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament. Concordia earned the GSAC's first automatic bid by virtue of winning the regular-season title. Biola will earn the GSAC's second bid by either winning the conference tournament or placing second to the regular-season winner in the championship game.

This will be Biola's fourth appearance in the GSAC Tournament Championship game and the Eagles are still looking for their first win. In all three of its previous appearances, Biola lost the title to Azusa Pacific, including an 80-66 loss to the Cougars in it's last appearance in 2001-02.

The two coaches meeting in this game are the two most successful in the conference, bringing a combined total of 1150 wins into tonight's contest. Biola head coach Dave Holmquist picked up his 840th career coaching victory with the win over Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday. That puts him at No. 11 on the all-time four-year college wins list, 31 behind University of Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun and 36 behind legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp.
