Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. --- Both the offense and pitching struggled on Saturday for Biola, which lost a pair of GSAC games to No. 14 Concordia by scores of 5-2 and 10-6, giving Concordia sweep of the four-game series and dropping Biola down into fourth-place in the conference standings.
Biola (17-20) was able to manage 11 hits in each game on Saturday, giving them 11 in each game of the four game series. However, the runs just weren't there as BU scored just eight runs in 17 innings on Saturday.
Game one was another close contest as the two previous games in La Mirada had been. Concordia struck first with a run in the second but Biola answered back with one in the top of the fourth. Michael Annunziata got Biola's first hit of the game, a single up the middle to get things going. Vinnie Fayard followed with a single and one out later, Covyeau hit an infield single to bring home Annunziata to tie the game.
Biola could not push across another run in the frame and Concordia answered right back with as Spencer Ofelt led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run.
Concordia would add two more on just one hit in the fifth--all with two outs. A hit by pitch, intentional walk, double steal and a two-run double by Ofelt made it a 4-1 Concordia lead.
The home team added one more run in the seventh as Ofelt again came through, this time with a sacrifice fly.
Biola would get a runner on in each inning between the fifth and the eighth, but could not push another run across. Fayard led off the eighth with a double down the left-field line, but was stranded there after three-straight groundouts ended the brief rally.
In the ninth, Biola mounted a bit of a come back as Mike Lopez led off with a single. Two outs later, Benji Sutherland kept the game going with a single up the middle and Annunziata drove home a run with a single to right. After a quick pitching change--just the second of the series for Concordia to that point--the rally ended with a strikeout, giving the game to Concordia.
Nick Turner took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 6-2/3 innings to fall to 2-4 while Jake Hovis picked up the win.
Game two got off to a lousy start for Biola with Concordia scoring three in the first, two in the second and two in the third to take an early 7-1 lead. Biola managed a run in the top of the third as Johnny Farrington hit a one-out double and Benji Sutherland followed with a single. Annunziata then hit a sacrifice fly to plate the Biola run.
Concordia would add another run in the bottom of the fifth, but Biola responded with two in the top of the sixth to close the gap a bit. With no out, Biola loaded the bases on singles by Fayard and Drake Fages and a walk to Covyeau. Mac Sutherland then singled up the middle to plate a pair and make it a 8-3 game. Despite two on with no one out, Biola could not push across another run and still trailed by five.
Concordia added two big insurance runs in the bottom of the frame to stretch it back to a seven-run game. Biola would rally a bit in the seventh, opening the inning with a double by Sutherland, a pinch-hit single by David McNeill and an RBI-double off the bat of pinch-hitter Michael Chriss to drive home a run. Wesley Cottier got a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to plate another run and pinch-hitter Sage Poland added another with a single.
But that would be as close as Biola would get as Javier Martinez suffered the loss to drop to 2-3.
The losses drop Biola to 10-10 in conference play and into fourth place in the conference after starting the week tied for second. Concordia extends its lead at second in the GSAC with The Master's moving up into third place by 1-1/2 games over Biola.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference game in Carson at 3:00 p.m. It is the only game of the week for Biola, which returns to GSAC play on Thursday, April 12 at Fresno Pacific University.
