COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Biola was able to hold on to one late lead after letting another slip through its grasp, splitting a GSAC doubleheader at Vanguard University on Saturday, losing game one 6-5 but winning game two 7-3.

The Eagles end the day with a record of 12-13 and improve to 6-6 in GSAC play, taking three games in the four game series. The Lions fall to 9-9 and are now 1-7 in the conference.

Biola received solid pitching from its starters for the third and fourth-straight games with Nick Turner allowing just one run over six innings in the opener and Javier Martinez surrendering three over four innings in the night-cap.

The Eagles seemed to be cruising in game one after a stellar start by Turner. The righty allowed just one run on six hits while striking out five in 6-2/3 innings, leaving with a 4-1 lead.

The Lions would score once in the bottom of the eighths with Biola answering back with one in the top of the ninth for insurance. But the insurance was not enough.

Vanguard would load the bases with one out when Alec Rosales drove in the first run with a single and Bryce Arroyo tied the game with a two-run double. After an intentional walk re-loaded the bases, a suicide squeeze Eric Sanchez brought home the winning run and gave the Lions their first GSAC victory.

The contest started as a bit of a pitcher's duel with Vanguard getting the first run of the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by Rosales.

Biola took the lead back in the sixth as Michael Annunziata doubled home two and the Eagles added two more in the seventh on a wild pitch and RBI-single by Wesley Cottier.

Turner would receive a no-decision in the contest--the third time this season he has left with a lead after a strong start.

In the second game, Martinez was called on to give a spot start for the struggling Kevin Ryan. Martinez got into a bit of a jam in the first two innings, but worked out of them and hung around long enough to get the win.

Biola struck first with three runs in the first inning. After a leadoff single by Benji Sutherland, Vanguard was able to retire the next two batters. But Nick Covyeau was hit by a pitch to extend the inning and Mac Sullivan made the Lions pay, crushing a three-run shot to right centerfield.

Vanguard got one back in the bottom of the inning with just one hit, benefiting from a wild start to the game by Martinez. He would walk the first batter and allowed a bunt single to put two on with no one out. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners along, Martinez allowed one to score via a wild pitch. He hit the next batter, but got a big strikeout and ending the inning with a ground out.

Biola got that run back in the top of the second inning. Annunziata led off the frame with a single and was moved to second on a wild pitch. Mike Lopez then bunted him along to third and Johnny Farrington laid down a great squeeze bunt to plate Annunziata and make it a 4-1 game.

Vanguard would tally two in the second as Martinez again got a bit wild. The Lions led the inning off with three-straight hits to score the first run and Martinez loaded the bases by hitting a batter. After a strikeout, he hit Brandon Young for the second time in as many at-bats to force home a run before getting another big strikeout to end the threat.

Martinez would settle down from there and set down the Lions in order in the third with two of the outs coming on strikeouts. He tallied two more strikeouts in the fourth around a pair of singles to work out of a jam and leave with the lead.

Kevin Ryan came on and closed out the game with a solid three-inning performance. He allowed just two hits and struck out three to earn the save.

Biola would add a few insurance runs late, this time making them stand up. In the sixth, Cottier was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and moved to third on a single by Annunziata. Lopez then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to make it 5-3, Biola.

In the seventh, Biola tacked on two more with an RBI-single off the bat of Vinnie Fayard, who would eventually come around to score on a throwing error.

Cottier finished the day by going 4-for-7 with Annunziata adding three hits in seven plate appearances. Sutherland also contributed with four hits and scored two runs.

Covyeau officially went 0-for-2 in the doubleheader, but reached base four times and scored a run.

Biola returns to action on Thursday, March 15, traveling south to face Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
