Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. ---
Given Kalipinde scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added 13 rebounds as Biola cruised to a GSAC victory over Hope International University on Saturday night at the Darling Pavilion.
The Eagles pick up their eighth win in their last nine games to improve to 20-8 on the season. Biola is now 10-6 and tied with Azusa Pacific University and Westmont College for third place in the conference, just two games out of first place. Hope drops to 11-12 and to 4-12 in GSAC play.
Kalipinde was nearly unstoppable on the night and as one of three Biola players to score in double-figures. Andre Murillo added 12 points with Davey Hopkins contributing 11.
However, the story was mostly on the defensive side of the ball where the Eagles held Hope International to just 60 points on 40.4% shooting. Biola also dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Royals 41-18. The nation's leading rebounder Steve Jurich was only able to pull down three boards and scored just seven points--all in the final two minutes of the game.
Kris Rosales led the Royals with 21 points while Jeremy Kilgore added 18.
Biola trailed for just about one minute in the game, which came near the midway point of the first half. Kilgore converted one of two free throws to give Hope a 13-12 lead with 11:52 but a layup by Kaimarr Price nearly one minute later gave Biola the lead back for good.
The Eagles would extend the lead to 10 on a layup by Hopkins with 3:10 to play in the period, but a short rally by the Royals cut the lead to six at 37-31 at the half.
Biola wasted little time extending the lead back to double-figures in the second half, just over two minutes in. Just past the halfway point, the Eagles used an 11-0 run to break the game open, capped by a fast-break layup by Hopkins to give Biola a 68-49 lead.
The Eagles allowed Hope to stay in the game by committing 18 turnovers which lead to 22 points by the home team. However, the Royals were hurt in the paint where Biola held a 42-18 edge and by missing free throws, hitting just 9-of-16 in the game.
The Eagles still have an outside shot at the conference title or could finish as low as sixth in the standings. Biola would need to win its final two games and hope for some help to have a shot at the regular season title. However, the Eagles are just one game back of Pt. Loma Nazarene for second and tied with APU and Westmont for third.
Biola closes out the regular season at home next week, welcoming San Diego Christian College to Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday, then The Master's on Saturday for Senior Night. Both games tip at 7:30 p.m.
