Box Score
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola returned home after a long road trip and quickly put four runs on the board in the first inning. However, Cal State LA added 11 runs in the second to its four first-inning runs and cruised to a 20-6 victory in a non-conference game on Monday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.
The Eagles drop to 4-4 with the loss in the game, which had originally been scheduled for last week, but postponed due to rain. The weather wasn't too much better on Monday, with high winds and cold weather the order of the day. While the winds seemed to affect both teams evenly, the wind seemed to shift out to left in the bottom of the second.
That would be the inning the Golden Eagles (4-2) would break the game open with an 11-run half inning which featured three home runs including a grand slam.
But those would be far from the first runs scored in the game.
Cal State LA got off to a fast start with a four-spot in the top of the first with five-straight hits to get things going. Biola would answer right back with four runs in the bottom of the first.
Vinnie Fayard had the big hit of the inning, plating two with a double to get thing going.
After the Eagles battled back to tie things up, the Golden Eagles broke things open with 11 runs in the second. With three runs already in and one out, David Compton broke the game open, clearing the bases with a grand slam to deep left field to make it an 11-4 game. Cal State LA would add four more on a pair of two-run home runs.
Biola would have a tough time getting any runs across the plate the next seven innings while Cal State LA would add five more runs to its tally and finish with 20 runs on 30 hits over the course of the game.
The Eagles would get two final runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as
Mike Lopez pinch-hit and collected a two-run single to account for the final scoring.
For senior pitcher
Kevin Ryan, it was his first loss in two years of pitching at Biola.
The loss temporarily delayed Biola Head Coach John Verhoeven's 500th win. He currently holds an overall record of 499-250-6 in his 15th year of coaching the Eagles.
He will get another chance to pick up the win at home before the Eagles head back out on the road for the next six games as BIola hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
