David Cline scored 15 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to lead Biola to a 72-53 win over Pacific Union College in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The win improves the Eagles' record to 5-2 on the season while the Pioneers fall to 0-5.
Cline led the way for Biola with his 20-point effort, hitting 7-of-9 from the field and adding six rebounds, two blocks and a steal. He also connected on 6-of-11 from the free throw line.
Zack Zaragoza added 13 points and seven boards with Cody Wittick scoring 10 points.
The Eagles fell behind early as Pacific Union jumped out to a 9-6 lead 5:30 into the contest. Four minutes later, Biola broke a 13-13 tie with a three-pointer by Wittick which keyed a long 16-4 run over an eight minute stretch to break the game open. The Eagles would head to the locker room with a 35-24 lead.
In the second half, Pacific Union came out strong and closed the gap to eight on a three-pointer by Will Bell. The trey made the score 44-36 with 14:39 left. But Cline hit a layup on the next Biola possession and Ball followed with a bucket in the pain one minute later and the lead was quickly back up to 12.
Leading by 13 with 6:01 to play, Biola rolled off nine-straight points with five coming from Cline to take its largest lead of the game at 68-46 with 3:00 left and cruised from there.
Biola shot well in the game, hitting 50 percent from the field including 54.2 percent in the second half.
The Pioneers were led by 20 points from Marcus Carter with Bell contributing 10. Pacific Union, which struggled on Monday at Hope, scoring just 27 points and shooting under 20 percent, shot a respectable 38.9 percent and used seven three-pointers to hang around.
But Biola controlled the boards, especially the offensive glass, recording 39 rebounds with 11 on its own end. The Eagles used that edge to outscore Pacific Union 16-0 in second-chance points.
Biola returns to action on Saturday, hosting La Sierra University in a non-conference game beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
