Biola Rejects San Diego Christian Upset Attempt in 62-60 Win

Zack Zaragoza
Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. --- Davey Hopkins hit a clutch three-pointer and Kaimarr Price blocked a shot as time expired to give Biola a big road victory, beating San Diego Christian College 62-60 in a GSAC game on Tuesday night.

The Eagles wrap up the first half of the GSAC schedule with a 4-5 conference mark and stand at 14-7 on the season. The Hawks fall to 5-11 and to 1-8 in GSAC play.

Hopkins finished with 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds, adding two assists in 35 minutes to pace Biola. Zack Zaragoza came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points in just 20 minutes of play while Price added 12 points and seven boards.

The finish to the game seemed to be a microcosm of a wild game between the two teams on Tuesday night. After Hopkins' three-pointer with 54 seconds to go gave Biola a 61-57 lead, San Diego Christian was able to answer back, getting two offensive rebounds off missed three-point attempts before Calvin Seaberry answered back with a trey to make it a 61-60 game with 15 seconds left.

Biola's Given Kalipinde was fouled on the inbound and hit one of two free throws to make it a two-point game. After a timeout, the Hawks ran a great play to get the ball to Xavier Mylleille who was one-on-one with Price in the low post. Mylleville went to his left, into the lane and went up only to see his shot rejected by Price as time expired. While there seemed to be a lot of contact on the shot attempt, the officials did not see a need to call a foul and the Eagles escaped with the victory.

As has become a frustrating regularity for Biola fans, the Eagles saw a big lead slip away late. Despite trailing through much of the first half, Biola opened the second half strong, using a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 44-36 six minutes in. A pair of three-pointers on the next two possessions by the Hawks' Raphael Rodriguez quickly brought it back to a two-point game.

Biola held on to a lead of as many as six the rest of the way and led by five with 4:17 to play. However, a three by Johnny Delbene followed by a Mylleville layup, tied the game at 56-56 with 2:28 to play. Price hit a layup to with 2:05 left to give Biola back the lead for good.

Despite allowing San Diego Christian back into the game, the Eagles were able to hold on for the win in the close game for the second-straight game after dropping four-straight close contests--the last two by one point each.

San Diego Christian finished the game with 10 three-pointers made to provide half of its total scoring output for the game, throwing up 23 from beyond the arc. Biola was 4-for-8 in the game with Hopkins and Zaragoza going a perfect 2-for-2.

The Eagles got off to a slow start overall in the game as roared out to a 17-6 lead seven minutes in. Biola whittled the lead down to on with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes thanks in large part of Kalipinde, who capped the run with a three-point play followed by a pair of free throws on the next possession.

San Diego Christian kept the lead for the rest of the half and headed to the break with a 32-30 lead.

Rodriguez led the Hawks with 13 points with Delbene adding 11.

Kalipinde scored 11 points with many of those points coming from the charity stripe where he hit 9-of-11 free throws. He added three steals, seven rebounds and a block.

Biola shot well in the second half, hitting 11-of-19 from the field including 3-of-5 from three-point range. The Eagles finished with a 51.2% field goal percentage in the game while holding the Hawks to just 43.4% shooting.

Biola also held a decisive 35-22 rebounding edge, but turned the ball over 14 times to San Diego Christian's nine. The Hawks were able to turn those Eagle miscues into 21 points, allowing them to hang around late.

The victory was the first road win for Biola in GSAC play this season and just the eighth win in El Cajon in the Eagles' last 14 trips.

Biola heads back on the road on Saturday, traveling down to Costa Mesa to face Vanguard University in a GSAC game at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles beat the Lions 83-53 when the two met in early December in La Mirada. Biola has won its last five games against Vanguard in Costa Mesa including the last two in last-second thrillers.
