Chase Adams scored 15 points and
Davey Hopkins added 13 as Biola held off a late charge from Hope International University to win 65-57 in a GSAC game on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The win snaps a three-game losing streak by the Eagles, who move to 13-7 overall and to 3-5 in conference play. The Royals fall to 9-6 and to 2-6 in GSAC competition with their fifth loss in six games.
Adams helped key the Biola victory with 15 points including nine from three-point range, adding five rebounds, a block and a steal. Hopkins was 5-of-9 from the field and had a game highs of six assists and seven rebounds to go along with his 13 points.
Biola led by double-digits through much of the game, especially in the second half, building a lead of as many as 14 with 10:30 to play. The Eagles still led by 11 on a three-point play by Hopkins which made it 52-41 with 4:30 to go. But things changed in a hurry as Hope forced four consecutive turnovers by the Eagles to go on a 10-0 run, cutting the lead to 52-51 on a pair of free throws by Matt Green with 1:52 remaining.
However, Hopkins snapped the string with a great individual effort. He corralled an offensive rebound, faked a pass out to the wing and drove in for the layup, drawing a foul on the play. He made the free throw to complete the three-point play and put the Eagles back up 55-51.
After a pair of free throws by the Royals on the other end, Biola came back down and converted another old-fashioned three-point play. This time it was the junior Given Kalipinde scoring his first three points of the game to make it a 58-53 game with 52 seconds to play. Biola would convert its free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.
Biola took advantage of inside height as Hope was without its leading scorer and the NAIA's leading rebounder in Steve Jurich, who averaged 15 points and 13.8 rebounds per game. Without him, the Eagles were able to hold a 39-25 rebounding edge and outscored Hope 34-16 in the paint.
The first half was a low-scoring one with just 15 points being scored between the two teams through the first 11 minutes. Biola held a three-point lead with eight minutes to go in the half, but quickly stretched the lead to 10 with a seven-point run keyed by a three-pointer by Anderson.
Three minutes later, Zaragoza hit a layin to make it 23-11 game with four to play. A Hope three-pointer would make it a nine-point game but free throws by Anderson gave Biola a 25-14 lead at the break.
Both teams each scored more points in the second half as they combined to score in the first with Hope scoring 43 and Biola 40. The Eagles shot 46.2% in the second ahlf while Hope shot 54.2% and was 5-of-7 from three-point range.
Jeremy Kilgore had 23 points--21 in the second half-- to pace Hope while Green aded 22 points and six rebounds.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, wrapping up the first half of GSAC play with a trip south to face San Diego Christian College at 7:30 p.m.
