LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola women's soccer season opened with a sour note as Cal Poly Pomona's Jennifer Rivera scored her second goal of the match with under two minutes left in the second overtime period to give the Broncos a 2-1 victory on Saturday night.
The Eagles (0-1-0) received a big second-half goal from Ashley Cooley, who finished a great pass from Taylor Lundquist in the 49th minute. Rivera had opened the scoring with a goal for CPP in the 18th minute.
Marina Rodriguez got the start in goal for the Eagles, allowing one goal and making a pair of saves. Senior Erin Frushon took over in the second half and made five saves, but suffered the loss. Sarah Rohman earned the win in goal for the Broncos, making five saves.
The Eagles are no stranger to overtime contests in the last few years. Biola played 10 overtime matches last year--the most of any team in the NAIA--going 3-1-6 in the those contests. The six ties were the most in program history.
Biola returns to the pitch on Tuesday, hosting Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference contest beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
