LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
Garrett Leon cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line with one out in the bottom of the eighth, breaking a tie and helping Biola complete a 6-3 come-from-behind win over Vanguard University in a GSAC game on Tuesday afternoon in La Mirada.
The Eagles, who moved all the way up to No. 7 in the latest NAIA National Rankings, rebound from a tough one-run loss to the Lions on Monday and improve to 23-11 on the season. Biola also remains atop the GSAC with a 17-5 conference mark. Vanguard falls to 15-18 on the season and to 11-12 in conference play.
The game was the third of four make-up games against Vanguard postponed by rain in mid-March. The make-ups forced Biola into an incredibly busy week as the Eagles play six games in six games this week and five games in six games next week.
Leon's double capped an impressive comeback win for the Eagles, who fell behind early to the Lions.
Vanguard opened the game with three unearned runs in the top of the first inning off starter
Bobby O'Neill. With two out and a runner at second, Jacob Domingos hit a ball back up the middle which O'Neill managed to get a glove on. He was quick to get the ball behind him, but rushed the throw and sailed it past first for an error.
That would allow one run to come home and open the gates to the Lions. Jason Dovel then singled to left to put two on and Kyle Hardman drove the pair home with a double to deep right-center field to make it 3-0 Vanguard.
But O'Neill settled down after that and allowed just three hits over the next six innings to allow his team a chance to get back into the contest.
Biola got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third as
Drake Fages blasted his GSAC-best 14th home run of the season to make it a 3-2 game.
The Eagles had numerous chances to tie the game in the next thre einnings, but a pair of double plays erased two of those threats.
Biola was able to break through with a run in the seventh to tie the game as
Benji Sutherland led off the inning with a double down the left-field line which was followed one out later by a double off the bat of
Vinnie Fayard.
In the top of the eighth, Vanguard put the potential go-ahead run in scoring position after a walk and a hit batter by Biola reliever
Matt Samsvick. However,
Jonathan Cade came in and got Domingos to hit into an inning-ending double play on his second pitch.
The Eagles then completed the comeback in the bottom of the eight with three runs on one swing.
Josh Burket started the rally with a lead-off walk followed by singles by
Michael Andrews and
Johnny Farrington. After the Lions got the first out of the inning at the plate, Leon welcomed Vanguard reliever Jerry Pena into the game with a bases-clearing double just fair down the left field line.
Cameron McVey then came on in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season and fifth in Biola's last seven games overall.
O'Neill received a no-decision, but was strong in his seven innings of work. He allowed just five hits and no earned runs while walking three and recording a pair of strikeouts. Cade picked up the win in relief despite tossing just two pitches.
Leon went 2-for-5 in the game with three RBIs while Fayard added two hits in five at bats, a run and an RBI. Andrews reached base in all four plate appearances, drawing walks in his first three trips before recording a single in his eighth-inning at-bat.
Biola now begins a huge GSAC series against No. 8 California Baptist University on Wednesday. The Eagles lead the Lancers by just one game in the conference standings. The battle between the two NAIA Top 10 teams kicks off with two games in La Mirada on Wednesday and Thursday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday in Riverside. The weekday games begin at 3:00 p.m. with Saturday's twinbill starting at Noon.
