No. 9 Biola Avenges Loss With 77-63 Win Over The Master's

Jennifer French

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Jennifer French scored 24 points and Christina Barclay added 22 as Biola used a big second half push to defeat The Master's College in a GSAC game on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles improve to 19-5 on the season and move to 11-4 in GSAC play. The Mustangs drop to 15-9 and to 8-7 in conference play.

The victory helped avenge an early loss to The Master's in Santa Clarita—Biola's only loss to a team outside of the NAIA Top 20 this season. However, it wasn't easy as the Mustangs shot well in teh first half and gave Biola a run for its money.

French led all scorers with 24 points, hitting 11-of-18 from the field and adding five rebounds, two assitss and two steals in 37 minutes.

Barclay continued her hot play since missing a game last week due to an injury. She scored 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting and added sven rebounds, three blocks, two steals and three assists. The highlight of the night came in the second half when she stepped in front of a pass at the top of the key, went coast-to-coast and laid it in between two defenders.

Senior forward Jessilyn Conicelli added 19 points and 10 rebounds for her 18th double-double of the season. It also marked the third-straight game she scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds.

The game was high scoring in the first half with the teams combining for 81 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Master's got the early drop on things, taking a quick 11-4 lead just over three minutes in. The Eagles rallied back and tied the game at 15-15 four minutes later only to see Erica Inge come down and hit one of seven three-pointers by the Mustangs in the opening stanza.

The trey by Inge started a small run which eventually found the Mustangs with a 29-21 lead with 7:30 to go. But Biola started to catch fire and used an 11-2 run over the next 4:30 to tie the score again, this time at 32-32.

The teams battled back and forth the rest of the half with a three-pointer by French with 12 seconds left giving Biola a slight 41-40 edge at the break.

The Eagles shot 55 percent (17-of-31) in the first half while the Master's hit 48 percent (15-of-31). The Mustangs would convert on 7-of-13 three-point attempts and doubled up the Eagles on the boards (20-10) to keep the game close.

Biola opened the second half by clamping down on defense and scoring on seven of its first 10 possessions. That led to a 16-6 Eagle run over the first six minutes of the period as Biola went up 57-46.

The Mustangs would narrow the gap to seven at 61-54 with 11:27 to go, but that would be as close as they got. Biola held The Master's to just two field goals the rest of the way and used a 16-2 run to break the game wide open. A short run over the final three minutes made the game a bit closer than it looked.

The Eagles finished the game by hitting exactly 50 percent of their shots (33-of-66) and committed just 12 turnovers in the contest. The big three for Biola combined to shoot 63 percent (29-of-46).

Biola dominated in the paint, outscoring the Mustangs 42-12 down low despite being outrebounded 35-32.

Inge and Zoe Scott do the majority of the damage for the Mustangs, each scoring 16 points. Inge connected on four three-pointers and added four points from the charity stripe to go along with three assista and four rebounds.

The Eagles currently sit in third place in the GSAC, two games behind first-place Azusa Pacific and one behind second-place California Baptist. Biola has by far the easiest road of the two, playing its final five games against the five teams at the bottom of the GSAC standings.

First up on the list is a clash against San Diego Christian College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Eagles won a very psychical battle between the two schools in La Mirada earlier this season by a score of 79-61.
