Gordon Goes for 20 Again as Biola Downs The Master's, 56-47

Dwight Gordon

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior guard Dwight Gordon scored 22 points—his fourth-straight 20-plus point game—to lead No. 18 Biola to a 56-47 victory in a GSAC game on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles pick up their second-straight win and move to 21-4 on the season and remain in third in the GSAC with an 11-4 conference mark. The Mustangs drop to 9-16 overall and to 2-13 in the GSAC having now lost 10 of their last 11 games.

Gordon had yet another solid night, hitting 8-of-11 from the field and adding five points from the free throw line to lead all scorers. Fellow high-school teammate Curtis Eatmon scored 12 points with senior guard Nate Rakestraw contributing eight.

The Mustangs had their outside game working, hitting 10 three-pointers in the contest while connecting on just eight two-point shots. The outside assult helped keep the game close through much of the first half, but Biola slowed down the attack in the second and pulled away.

Despite all of the three pointers, the Eagles led throughout the entire first half until a final three-pointer with 1:12 left to go gave the Mustangs a 25-24 halftime lead.

In the second half, Biola opened the period with a long 13-4 run spanning the first 8:30 to take a 37-28 lead. The Eagles held The Master's to just 1-of-7 shooting over that stretch and forced five turnovers.

The Mustangs quickly cut the defict to three and trailed by just two after a three-pointer by Ronnie Dodd made it 41-39 with 6:48 left. But the Eagles answered with a three-pointer by Rakestraw, a solid defensive stand and a jumper in the paint by Josh Miller to extend the lead back up to seven.

The Master's made one final push, pulling to within four with 3:18 to go on a three-pointer by Leif Karlberg—his fourth of the contest. But the Eagles would not allow the Mustangs to get any closer, answering with a bucket from Gordon and another by Eatmon to salt the game away.

Karlberg led the Mustangs with 16 points and added three steals while Anthony Cammon added 12. All but two players for The Master's hit a three-pointer in the game.

Biola held the Mustangs to 33.3 percent shooting (18-of-54), while connecting on 46.7 percent of its shot in the contest.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, traveling to El Cajon for a GSAC contest against San Diego Christian College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
