LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
Nate Rakestraw drained a three-pointer with 1:21 left to give Biola a four-point lead it would not relinquish in a hard-fought 58-51 win over Pt. Loma Nazarene University in its regular-season finale on Thursday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles wrap up the regular season with a 26-4 overall record and finish third in the GSAC with a 16-4 record. The Sea Lions are 13-15 and 9-10 in GSAC play with one game remaining.
Biola had three players record double-doubles in the game, led by
Curtis Eatmon, who had 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Josh Miller added 12 points and 10 rebounds while
Dwight Gordon added 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Neither team shot well in the game with the Eagles shooting just 35.8 percent and Pt. Loma connecting on 29 percent of its shots. The game went back and forth with 10 lead changes and four ties.
Biola looked to be ready to run away with the game early on, using a 10-3 run to take an 18-8 lead just past the halfway mark of the first half. But Point Loma went on a quick run and tied the game at 20-20, knotting the score on a three-point by play Hayden Lescualt with 6:40 left.
Neither team would lead by more than three the rest of the half, with the Sea Lions trailing by just one at 30-29 thanks to a Todd Campbell jumper in the paint as the period expired.
Biola again came out strong in the second half and slowly worked the lead back up to nine at 43-34 with 11:55 to play only to see Point Loma respond again. This time, the Sea Lions rattled off a 10-0 run over a four minute stretch to take a 44-43 lead with 6:58 to play.
The Eagles were able to keep a slight lead though Wil Bush's three-pointer made it a one-point game at 50-49 with 1:46 left. But Rakestraw answered back on the other end with a three-pointer from the left side to put Biola back up by four with 1:21 to play.
Point Loma's Rhett Beal brought the visitors to within two again with just over a minute to play, but Biola would make five of six free throws down the stretch and hold the Sea Lions without a bucket the rest of the way to wrap up the victory.
Rakestraw finished with eight points in the game--all coming in the second half. He would add three steals and a blocked shot.
The victory gave Biola 26 wins on the season, marking the second-straight season the Eagles won 25 or more games. Biola has now won 20 or more games in 25 of Coach Dave Holmquist's 31 years at the helm. The Eagles also record their second-best GSAC record, matching last season's mark at 16-4.
Next up for Biola is the GSAC playoffs, which begin on Thursday, March 3. The Eagles wrapped up third place in the conference tonight and will again face Point Loma Nazarene, which will earn the No. 6 seed, in a 7:30 p.m. game at Chase Gymnasium on Thursday. The GSAC semifinals and finals will be played at Concordia on Saturday, March 5, and Tuesday, March 8.
