LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
Josh Miller hit a three-pointer from the corner with 4.1 seconds left to lead No. 15 Biola to a 73-71 upset win over No. 2 Concordia in a GSAC game at Chase Gymnasium on Saturday night.
Biola improves to 24-4 on the season and to 14-4 in GSAC play, snapping an eight-game losing streak to Concordia.
The loss snaps Concordia's NAIA-best 23-game winning-streak, falling to 25-3 on the season. It was also Concordia's first GSAC loss of the season, dropping the defending GSAC champs to 17-1.
Miller's three-pointer capped a frantic comeback by Biola, which trailed by as many as 13 in the second half and was down by 12 with 9:51 to play. However, a 13-0 run over the next three minutes gave Biola its first lead of the night capped by a three-pointer by Miller from the opposite corner as his game-winner.
After the two teams exchanged buckets, Biola forced a turnover with under a minute left in a 70-70 tie and had possession of the ball with 27 seconds left. Miller than capped the thrilling finish with a three-pointer from right in front of the Biola bench to give the home team a 73-70 lead with 4.1 seconds left.
Biola quickly fouled on the inbound play and Ben Smith made the first free throw, then missed intentionally on the second. He would get his own rebound well outside of the three-point arc and his desperation shot as time expired fell well short.
"I'm proud of our guys," said Biola Head Coach Dave Holmquist. "It was a great win, one of two we had this week after winning at Fresno Pacific on Tuesday. We made a lot of plays down the stretch and beat a very good team. The guys are really excited and we hope this can help us close out the final two games of the regular season."
Biola got off to a sloppy start in the game, committing nine turnovers in the first nine minutes and falling behind 15-8 over that stretch. Concordia stretched the lead to as many as 11 in the first half and led by eight at 38-30 at the half.
Biola shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23) to Concordia's 50 percent (16-of-32), but turned the ball over 13 times leading to 15 points by Concordia.
Things didn't get much better in the second half as Concordia stretched the lead back up to 11 on an Austin Simon three-pointer to open the half. Concordia continued to answer each Biola bucket over the next 10 minutes and maintained a double-digit lead for much of that stretch.
Things seemed to change a bit with just under 10 minutes to play. With the teams heading to the sideline after a Biola timeout, Concordia's Edward Willis was whistled for a technical foul after saying something to an official. Miller drained the two free throws to make it a nine point game at 59-50 with 9:52 to play.
On the other end, Concordia's Taylor King drained a long three which put the visitors back up by 12 at 62-50. However, Biola clamped down on defense after that and held Concordia scoreless over the next five minutes, using that time to rattle off 13-straight points and take a 63-62 lead on Miller's three.
Concordia was able to go back up by four 67-63 thanks to free throws, offensive rebounds and an easy layup by Justin Johnson with 3:31 to go. But Gordon, who had a game-high 25 points, answered back with a layup, then after a defensive stop, hit another runner in the lane to tie the game up with 2:35 left.
The teams exchanged buckets before King hit one of two free throws to make it a 70-69 game with 1:30 left. On the other end, Gordon was whistled for offensive foul on another driving attempt in the lane, giving the ball back to CUI with 1:17 left.
On the next possession, King inexplicably took a three-pointer from well beyond NBA range which he air-balled with 16 seconds still on the shot clock. The poor decision gave the ball back to Biola with 57 seconds left. Gordon was fouled after a quick drive to the hoop and made the first of two shots to tie the game with 51 seconds to go.
Biola again got a big break as King's pass to Ben Smith under the basket was behind the big man and went off his outstretched arms and out of bounds with 25 seconds to go.
That set up a fantastic finish for the home fans. After a timeout and a chaotic inbounds play, Gordon drove to the hoop and found Miller in the corner for the win.
Biola really clamped down on defense just when it needed to, holding Concordia to 35.7 percent shooting in the second half including just one field goal over the final nine minutes of the game.
Meanwhile, Biola finished by shooting 52.0 percent, the second-best night of the season and best against a GSAC opponent.
Gordon returned to form with his 25 points in the game, hitting 10-of-14 from the field. He had gone quiet the last two games after recording 20-plus points in the previous four.
Curtis Eatmon added 21 points while Miller finished with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.
King finished with 15 points to lead Concordia while Cameron Gliddon and Justin Johnson each added 12 points.
The victory was Biola's first over Concordia since an 83-81 overtime win in Irvine on Feb. 24, 2006. Biola had lost the last eight games against Concordia including a 23-point blowout loss in Irvine earlier this season.
The victory also keeps Concordia from a perfect GSAC record, which could have been the first since Azusa Pacific ran the conference table in 1994-95 when just seven teams were in the GSAC.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Fullerton to face Hope International University in a GSAC battle at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles close out the regular season against Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday, also at 7:30 p.m.
