Biola Flies Past San Diego Christian, 67-45

Andrew Schroeder
EL CAJON, Calif. --- Andrew Schroeder scored 18 points and Josh Miller added 16 as Biola cruised to a 67-45 win over San Diego Christian College in a GSAC contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles improve to 22-4 on the season with their third-straight victory and move to 12-4 on the season. The Hawks drop to 7-19 and to 1-15 in conference play.

Schroeder had a near-perfect night, scoring 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and adding four free throws on as many attempts. He also had eight rebounds and three streals.

Miller contributed 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding six boards.

The game was a low-scoring affair which suits Biola perfectly. The Eagles, who rank second in scoring defense in the NAIA, held its 13th opponent to 50 or fewer points in a game.

San Diego Christian got the early drop on Biola, opening up a quick 7-2 lead four minute in. The Eagles would not take their first lead until the 10:51 mark on a jumper by David Cline which made it 10-9. Biola held a slight three-point advantage at 18-15 with 6:30 to go before blowing the game open with a 14-4 run to close out the first half.

The Eagles would take a 32-19 lead to the locker room, having held their opponent to 20 points or less in a half for the seventh time this season.

In the second half, Biola came out strong, using a 9-0 run to take a 42-21 lead four minutes into the half. After the Hawks cut the gap to 15 at the 13 minute mark, Biola answered with a 13-1 run over the next four minutes to take a commanding 27-point lead and cruised from there.

Biola held the Hawks to 35.4 percent shooting in the contest including just 7-of-23 in the first half. The Hawks kept things respectable in the second half with four three-pointers, but could not overcome 14 turnovers. Biola, meanwhile, turned the ball over a season-low five times.

The Eagles also dominated inside, outscoring the Hawks 32-14 in the paint and out-rebounding SDCC 39-27. Ever player had a rebound for Biola with Schroeder leading the way with eight.

San Diego Christian's leading scorer was Jason Starr, who came off the bench to score 11 points.

Dwight Gordon's impressive streak of four-straight games with at least 20 points came to an end as the senior scored just one point in the contest. He was limited to just 13 minutes, though, likely resting up for the busy week the Eagles have next week.

In fact, no Biola player played more than 29 minutes in preparation for two big games next week. First up, the Eagles travel north to Fresno to take on the Sunbirds at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Saturday, Biola returns home to host No. 2 Concordia University, looking for the big upset in a 7:30 p.m. showdown at Chase Gymnasium.
