Five Players Score in Double Figures as Biola Rolls Past Hope

Andrew Schroeder

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Andrew Schroeder had an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double and was one of five players to score in double figures as Biola dispatched Hope International 78-63 in a GSAC game on Tuesday night.

The Eagles rebounded from just their second loss of the season to improve to 17-2 on the year and to 7-2 in GSAC play. The Royals fall to 11-8 and to 2-7 in the conference.

Schroeder had an efficient night, hitting 7-of-11 from the field to tally a season-high 18 points—13 of which came in the second half. He added 11 rebounds including five on the offensive glass, and had two assists, a block and a steal.

Schroeder was one of five Biola players to score in double-figures. Dwight Gordon added 14 points and eight rebounds with David Cline recording a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 10 boards.

Biola had a tough time pulling away from the Royals, who put up an impressive fight in the contest. Hope led by as many as five in the first half, talking a 19-14 lead on a jumper by David Wedge with 10:26 to go in the period. The Eagles rallied back with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to go up by two and would not trail again.

Biola got off to a quick start in the second half, turning a seven-point halftime lead into an 11-point advantage with four points by Schroeder in the first minute of the half. Biola would stretch the lead to as many as 19 with 5:34 left before a bit of a late rally closed the gap a bit near the end.

Both teams shot over 40 percent in the contest, but Biola's inside dominance was the turning point of the game. The Eagles outscored the Royals 42-26 in the paint and held a 44-26 edge in rebounding including a 16-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

Biola closes out the first half of conference play on Thursday with a road game at Point Loma Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles open the second half with a road game at Westmont College on Tuesday before returning to Chase Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 29, to host California Baptist University. The Saturday game will be Dave Holmquist Night where the Biola Community will honor Coach Holmquist, who recently became the 16th men's basketball coach in history to win 800 games.

Tonight's victory gave him 805 in his career, moving him past Oklahoma State coaching great Eddie Sutton into 15th place on the all-time win chart.
