SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- A questionable free kick led to the only goal of the match as NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino defeated Biola 1-0 in a non-conference match in scorching weather on Friday afternoon in San Bernardino.
The Eagles drop to 1-1-0 with the loss while the Coyotes pick up a victory in the first match of the year.
Both teams struggled under the 105 degree heat, leading to the low-scoring affair. Each side had a number of solid scoring opportunities, but neither was able to cash in during regulation.
In the first extra period, the center referee awarded a controversial free kick to Cal State San Bernardino just outside of the box. Janine Carmona was able to score on the free kick 5:45 into overtime to give the Coyotes the victory.
Biola returns to action on Monday (Sept. 6), hosting Colorado Christian University in a non-conference contest beginning at 11:00 a.m.
