LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite what some would consider a "down" year, Biola still had a shot to reach the playoffs on the final day of the season. However, a split against The Master's and a pair of upsets 25 miles to the south turned out to mark the end of the year for the Eagles.
Biola came from behind to win the first game of the doubleheader in dramatic fashion as Trevor Blood belted a walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning. However, the Eagles lost the second game 12-4 and had to wait for news from the south where Vanguard and Concordia were doing battle.
Concordia took the first game easily, and held a 5-1 lead in the seventh before Vanguard rallied to tie the game at 5-5. The Lions had a chance to win in regulation but had two runners thrown out at the plate in the seventh and had to go to extra innings. But in the eighth, Concordia scored twice and held on for the 7-5 victory, clinching the final spot in the GSAC playoffs.
The Eagles end the season with a record of 24-22, 16-20 in the GSAC. The Mustangs' victory secures fifth place in the GSAC at 18-18 and are 25-23 overall.
In the first game, Biola starter Bobby O'Neil was spectacular, tossing a strong seven shutout innings to keep the Mustangs at bay.
Biola took advantage of the strong pitching to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Eagles took the lead in the first inning on an RBI-double by
Vinnie Fayard. They would add another in the fourth on a solo shot by Blood. Biola scored again in the fifth on a solo shot by
Boone Farrington, then added one more in the sixth on an RBI double off the bat of
Brian Loard.
O'Neill continued to cruise through the seventh, but ran into trouble in the eighth. With one out, the Master's put two on base with a walk and a single, but O'Neill coaxed a flyout for the second out. After getting a 2-2 count on Joe Zeller, the Mustang's starting pitcher then blasted a three-run shot to left to make it a 4-3 game.
After a double, Jared Otto tied the game with a single to left to make it a 4-4 game. O'Neill would get out of the jam with a ground out.
Biola loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but could not score and had a runner at second with two out in the ninth but were unable to break through.
After thwarting a Mustang rally in the top of the 10th, Blood ended the game with a one-out home run--his second of the game--to give Biola the 5-4 win.

Mike Frisina continued his dominance over The Master's. After tossing a scoreless 5-1/3 innings on Wednesday in Santa Clarita, he pitched a strong two innings to earn the win on Saturday.
In the second game, things fell apart quickly for the Eagles as the Mustangs got to Biola starter
Alex Brueske for six runs in the first. sending 10 batters to the plate to jump out to the early lead.
After a 1-2-3 inning by the Eagles, the Mustangs would score a quick two runs in the second on a home run by Jared Otto to chase Brueske. The junior surrendered eight runs in one-plus inning as Biola found itself in an early 8-0 hole.
The Eagles started to climb back into the game in the bottom of the second with a lead-off solo shot by Fayard. Two outs later, Loard belted a two run shot which cut the lead to 8-3.
The Mustangs added two more runs on a controversial home run call in the fourth. The drive off the bat of Chris Talley appeared to hit a tree to the left of the foul pole in left field but was called fair giving The Master's the 10-3 lead.
Biola got one back in the fifth on a pinch-hit single by
Josh Burket to make it 10-4. The Eagles would load the bases in the inning and again in the sixth, but were unable to score on either occasion.
The Mustangs would tack on two more runs and win 12-4.
Fayard and Blood led the way for the Eagles on the day. Fayard was 5-for-9 with a home run and two RBIs. Blood went 4-for-8 in his final game at Biola with two home runs.
It was also the final game for four other seniors, Frisina,
Daniel Bodemer,
Armando Arzate and
Dale Harder.
