Eagles' Offense Disappears Again in 6-2 Loss at The Master's

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- For just the sixth time this season the Biola offense failed to muster more more than two runs, dropping the second game of its GSAC four-game series with The Master's College by a score of 6-2 on Thursday in Santa Clarita.

The loss drops the Eagles to 23-21 on the season and to 15-19 in GSAC play. The good news is that Concordia, which is tied with Biola for the sixth and final GSAC playoff spot, also lost on Thursday, setting up a big final Saturday for both teams. The Mustangs improve to 24-22 and move to 17-17 in conference.

Biola had a tough time getting the clutch hits to fall in the game. Despite matching The Master's nine hits, the Eagles were just 1-of-8 with runners in scoring position.

The Mustangs starter David Goodenough wasn't perfect--allowing two runs on nine hits--but was good enough to get the victory. He pitched a complete game for The Master's, striking out six to improve to 5-3.

Biola starter Kyle Atkins, who was making just his second collegiate start, allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings. He would received only two runs of run support in the contest and fell to 4-3 on the year.

The Eagles opened the game with bang as Christopher Neal hit a lead-off home run to right field to stake Biola to an early 1-0 lead.

That lead would be short-lived however as The Master's answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added one more in the second to go up 3-1.

The Eagles started off the fourth inning in promising fashion as Vinnie Fayard hit a double to center followed by an RBI-double off the bat of Trevor Blood to cut the lead to 3-2. After a ground out moved Blood to third with one out, the Eagles were unable to get him in as a shallow fly out followed by a strikeout ended the threat.

The Master's would stretch its lead to three with a two-run sixth as an RBI-double and a passed ball accounted for the Mustangs two.

They would tack on one more in the seventh, greeting new Biola pitcher Dale Harder with a pair of doubles to lead off the frame.

Blood was one of three hitters to collect two or more hits, going 3-for-4 in the game. Fayard added two hits in four at-bats while Neal was also 2-for-4.

Biola closes out the four game series with an important doubleheader on Saturday (May 1). The Eagles and Concordia are tied for the sixth and final playoff spot heading into the final day of the regular season. Since Concordia holds the tiebreaker, Biola must win one more game than Concordia to clinch the final spot. Concordia wraps up its season at Vanguard.
