RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Biola scored seven runs over the final two innings to knock No. 5 California Baptist University 10-4 in the first game of a four-game GSAC series in Riverside on Wednesday night.
The Eagles improve to 21-13 on the season and to 14-11 in conference play while handing the Lancers just their fifth GSAC loss of the season while dropping them to 31-11 overall and 20-5 in conference.
Biola's late rally broke open what had been an incredibly close game up to that point. After holding an early lead, the Eagles found themselves down 4-3 with two down and no one on in the top of the eighth. But after a two-out single by
Daniel Bodemer,
Brian Loard blasted a two-run shot to left-center field to put Biola back on top.
But the Eagles weren't done, adding five runs in the top of the ninth inning to blow the game open. The inning was capped by a grand slam off the bat of pinch-hitter
Brent Opdyke.
Bobby O'Neill picked up the victory for the Eagles in relief with a strong 1-1/3 innings.
Alex Brueske pitched a perfect final two innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Biola starter
Mike Frisina allowed just three runs to the GSAC-leading Lancers while scattering 10 hits over 5-2/3 innings but did not factor in the decision.
The Eagles got off to a strong start, with two runs in the first inning thanks to a two-run shot by
Vinnie Fayard, his 12th of the season.
Cal Baptist got one run back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly only to see Biola get the run back in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Loard.
The Lancers scored again in the bottom of the inning and took the lead with two runs in the sixth on a home run by pinch-hitter Cody Sepulveda. But after that hit, Cal Baptist could muster just one more hit the rest of the way in the loss.
The victory by Biola was the fifth-straight win over the Lancers, who have not lost to Cal Baptist since the 2008 season, and the seventh win in the last eight meetings between the two schools.
The two teams meet again on Thursday (Apr. 15) in the second game of the four game series before heading to La Mirada to close out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 17).
