Ninth Inning Game One Rally Fuels Biola Sweep

Armando Arzate

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola received a much-needed GSAC sweep on Saturday, using a ninth-inning rally to take game one 6-5 and following it up by holding on for a 9-7 win in game two to take a pair of games from Concordia University at Eagles Diamond.

Biola improves to 20-12 with the victories and to 13-11 in conference play while Concordia falls to 19-18 overall and to 9-15 in the GSAC.

Both games proved to be thrillers with the first featuring Biola's first walk off win since beating Azusa Pacific 2-1 in early March.

Biola led 3-2 through much of the game before Concordia tied the score at 3-3 in the eighth. Biola added a run in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead back only to see the visitors score twice in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 lead.

But Biola was not finished. Armando Arzate led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a walk to Boone Farrington. Garrett Leon, who had gone 0-for-4 up to that point, tied the game with a single into left. After a wild pitch moved up the runners 90 feet, Vinnie Fayard was intentionally walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Brent Opdyke then ended the game with a grounder to second that was misplayed allowing Farrington to score from first.

Biola fell behind early as Concordia scored twice in the top of the third on a two-run single by John Hill. But that proved to be one of the only Concordia threats through the first seven innings as Biola starter Bobby O'Neill was dealing. O'Neill allowed just three runs on five hits over eight innings, walking five but striking out three. However, despite leaving with the lead, he did not pick up the win.

Biola would tie the game in the fourth on an RBI double by Benji Sutherland and a wild pitch which scored Trevor Blood. The Eagles would take the lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Farrington, scoring Brian Loard, who led off the frame with double.

But Concordia spoiled the early celebration with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth as Pete Lemone drove home the tying run with a single and Robbie Knowles drove in the go-ahead run the hard way being hit by a pitch. Things could have been worse as the bases remained loaded with one out, but Arzate made a great play at short, snagging a line-drive and tossing over to Leon for the double play to end the inning.

Kyle Atkins picked up the win after blowing the save in the ninth. He improves to 4-1 on the season. Blake Harrison suffered the loss to fall to 1-1.

In the second game, Concordia jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first and adding another in the second. But Biola shot back in the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a seven-run inning.

Loard led off the frame with a double and moved to third on a one-out single to left by Arzate. Daniel Bodemer then drove both runners home with a double down the left-field line. After a walk to Christopher Neal, Farrington gave the Eagles the lead with a three-run home run. That was followed quickly by a solo shot by Leon to make it 6-4. Biola would tack on one more run on an RBI-double by Sutherland.

Biola would then add two more runs in the third on an RBI-single by Farrington and a run-scoring double by Fayard.

From there, Alex Brueske took over on the hill. After allowing the early runs, Brueske settled down and allowed just three more runs--two of which were earned. He worked out of a number of jams to gut out the complete-game win. Brueske's final inning was a tough one as Concordia loaded the bases with three singles with two out. However, he was able to strikeout Knowles swinging to end the game.

Brueske improves to 5-3 on the season with the win while Melvin Blackmon suffered the loss to fall to 1-5.

Arzate had a banner day for Biola, going 5-for-7 with two runs scored. Sutherland was 4-for-7 with three doubles and three RBIs.

Biola returns to action on Monday (Apr. 12), hosting Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference game beginning at 2:30 p.m.
