LAKESIDE, Calif. --- Biola continued its offensive assault, pounding out 28 hits in a GSAC doubleheader sweep over San Diego Christian, completing a sweep of the four-game series, winning 12-6 and 9-5 on Saturday afternoon at Stars Field in Lakeside.
The Eagles have now won nine of their last 11 games and improve to 16-6 on the season. With a number of upsets atop the GSAC standings, Biola also moves within 2-1/2 games of first place with a 10-5 conference record. The Hawks fall to 2-17, 2-14 in the GSAC.
Garrett Leon paced the offense with four hits in seven at-bats including two doubles and a home run and recorded eight RBIs.
Michael Andrews recorded four hits in six at-bats and scored four times.
Biola had just two hits but still managed one run over the first four innings of game one, struggling to figure out SDCC starter China McCarney. But they were finally able to get to McCarney in the fifth inning as Biola's 7-8-9 hitters each reached base with singles to open the frame. With the bases full and one out, Leon drove home two with a double to make it 3-0. After a sacrifice fly by
Vinnie Fayard plated another run, Trevor Blood cleared the bases with his eighth home run of the season to make it 6-0.
The Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Biola answered with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Blood drove in the first run the hard way, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Two outs later,
Rucky McKinley plated another one with a bases-loaded walk and the Eagles led 8-1.
The Eagles would add two more runs in the top of the eighth on a two-run shot by Leon, putting the team up 10-1.
Meanwhile, Biola starter
Dale Harder was cruising despite a bit of wildness. Harder went a strong seven innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. He also was a bit wild, walking five batters and hitting another, but managed to work out of jams to pick up the win and move to 3-1.
After allowing a lead-off walk in the bottom of the eighth, Harder was relieved by
Jonathan Cade. But the Hawks responded with a two-run home run by the first batter Cade faced followed by a solo shot to the next batter. Cade would give up one more run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly, but worked out of the inning with Biola still leading 10-5.
The Eagles added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth, the first on an RBI-single by
Armando Arzate and the second on a sacrifice fly by Leon. The final at-bat gave Leon a 3-for-3 day with six RBIs and three runs scored.
Things got a bit dicey in the bottom of the ninth as the first two SDCC batters reached base. But the Eagles called on
Kyle Atkins to wrap up the game. Atkins walked the first batter to load the bases, but got a double play and a fly out to close out the ball game.
In the second game, the Eagles jumped out to a quick lead, scoring four runs in the top of the first. After a leadoff walk, Leon picked up right where he left off with an RBI-double to plate the first run. A walk and a hit-batter later,
Mac Sullivan drove home two more with a double and
Brent Opdyke plated another with a sacrifice fly.
San Diego Christian got two runs back in the bottom of the frame, on a two-out, two-RBI double by Maxime Ouellette.
Biola added a run in the third on another sacrifice fly by Opdyke, then added two more runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI groundouts by Leon and Fayard.
San Diego Christian scored another two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-4, but could get no closer. The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs on solo home runs by
Daniel Bodemer in the fifth and
Boone Farrington in the sixth.
Biola starter Bobby O'Neill nearly went the distance, recording the first two outs of the seventh before running into trouble. After a pair of walks, Atkins was called upon again to wrap up the game. The junior surrendered a run on an RBI-single before getting the last out on a ground ball.
O'Neill earned the win to improve to 1-1, tossing 6-2/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits.
Biola returns to GSAC play this week, hosting GSAC front-runner Vanguard University in the first two games of a four-game series on Wednesday (Mar. 24) and Thursday (Mar. 25) at Eagles Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on both days.
