SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola suffered a rare offensive power outage at the hands of Westmont's Jacob Regalado, who allowed just two runs over eight innings as the Warriors downed the Eagles 5-2 in a GSAC clash on Thursday afternoon at Russ Carr Field.
Biola's loss snaps its four-game winning streak and drops the Eagles to 11-5 on the season and to 5-4 in GSAC play. Westmont improves to 6-12, 2-6 in the conference.
Regalado out-dueled Biola's
Mike Frisina in a rare GSAC pitcher's dual. The left-hander allowed just two runs on six hits over eight innings to pick up his first victory of the season. Frisina matched the home side's hurler with a strong effort over the first five innings, but things fell apart in the pivotal sixth.
Biola had just tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning, but Westmont responded by putting the game away with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame. Westmont designated hitter Timothy Leary wasted no time getting the Warriors back on top, blasting a solo home run to left field on the first pitch of the inning.
After giving up a single to the next batter, Frisina departed the game, giving way to Bobby O'Neil. But O'Neill was greeted rudely as Coby Cress rattled a triple of the left-center field wall to make it a 4-2 game. Cress would come around to score on a Chris Ramirez single to cap the scoring.
Biola had a great opportunity to get to Regalado early in the game as the junior was a bit wild to start off. Regalado walked the first two batters he faced, but got a big break as he coaxed a double-play out of
Vinnie Fayard. Fayard's hustle was the only thing which kept the play from being a triple-play though the Warriors were able to get the two lead runners.
But Regalado walked Trevor Blood to keep the inning alive and
Mac Sullivan made him pay with a single to plate Fayard and give Biola an early 1-0 lead.
Westmont picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead right back. After allowing back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, Frisina compounded the problem by throwing the ball away on a sacrifice bunt attempt. The error allowed one to score and moved the other runner to third where he scored later on a sacrifice fly.
Biola would tie the score in the top of the sixth as Blood led off with a double, then came around to score on a single by
Rucky McKinley. But the Eagles were unable to muster much offense on the day despite having at least one runner in eight of the nine innings.
The two teams close out the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 13) at Eagles Diamond. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m.
