Hampton Goes Over 1,500 Career Points as Biola Downs Cal Baptist, 58-45

Rocky Hampton

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior center Rocky Hampton had a game-high 17 points and became just the fifth player in school history to record over 1,500 career points as Biola knocked off California Baptist University 58-45 in a GSAC game on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles, ranked No. 6 in the latest NAIA National Poll, improve to 25-4 overall and to 15-4 in conference play. The Lancers fall to 17-12, 10-9 in the conference.

While the power was out to much of campus on Saturday, Biola was able to keep the games on schedule thanks to a reliable generator. Inside the gym, Hampton was the reliable generator, generating most of the Eagles' offense inside. The senior, who was playing in his final regular season home game, was 8-of-10 from the field, finishing 17 points, six rebounds, three blocked shots and a steal.

Senior guard Marlon King took care of the backcourt for the Eagles, scoring 13 points and connecting on 5-of-8 shots including a pair of clutch three-pointers to put the game out of reach late.

Cal Baptist got off to a hot start in the game as Biola could not muster much on the offensive end. The Lancers used an early pair of three-pointers to build a 10-4 lead just over 4:30 into the contest. The Eagles slowly chipped away and managed to take their first lead of the game at the 4:53 mark on a put-back jumper by Hampton in the paint. Biola held on to that lead the rest of the half, holding a 31-27 advantage at halftime.

But the second half proved to be all Biola. Each team had just two field goals over the course of the first five minutes with the Eagles still leading by just four at 35-31 with 15:27 left. Biola then went on a 12-2 run over the next six minutes to open up a 47-33 advantage. The Lancers whittled the lead down to eight with a quick six-point run. The Eagles responded with a bucket by Hampton followed by a three-pointer by King to go back up by 13 with 6:20 still to play.

Cal Baptist continued to hang around and trailed by just 11 with 4:18 left. But King slammed the door with a wide-open three-pointer from right in front of the Biola bench. The Lancers would go 0-for-7 from the field over the final 5:35 of the game, scoring just three points over the final 6:11 of the game.

The Eagles defense once again was on display, holding the Lancers to just 32 percent shooting (16-of-50) including 22 percent (6-of-27) in the second half. Biola shot a respectable 52.3 percent (23-of-44) overall. Cal Baptist managed just 45 points against Biola after scoring 47 when the teams met earlier this season in Riverside.

Biola wraps up the regular season with a 15-2 home record, it's best mark since going 16-0 during the 2004-05 regular season. It is especially important this season with the Eagles hosting the GSAC semifinals and finals.

During halftime of tonight's game, the 1979-80 men's basketball team was honored with 15 of 17 members making the trip back to Biola. That team finished with a 26-4 record, becoming the first Biola team to reach the NAIA National tournament, advancing to the round of 16. It was the first of 16 NAIA National tournament appearances with No. 17 likely to come this season.

Biola wraps up the regular season on the road Monday (Mar. 1), heading to Fullerton to take on Hope International University in a GSAC contest at 7:30 p.m.
