Farrington's Four-Hit Game Leads Biola to 14-3 Win Over Bethany

Boone Farrington

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore Boone Farrington went 4-for-5 and was a home run short of the cycle as Biola broke out the lumber for the second-straight day, defeating Bethany University 14-3 in a non-conference game on Tuesday at Eagles Diamond.

The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season with the victory while the Bruins drop to 0-4.

Farrington's four-hit game from the lead-off spot paced Biola's offense which was fueled by a strong game from its top five hitters. The top of the order combined to go 12-for-21 in the contest and accounted for 12 of the Eagles' 14 runs in the game.

Farrington had a pair of doubles, a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs from the top spot, followed by second baseman Garrett Leon, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Center fielder Vinnie Fayard added a pair of hits including a two-run shot and Mac Sullivan contributed a solo home run from the clean-up spot.

All the offense helped junior starter Jeff Grijalva, who picked up his second win in as many starts, allowing three runs--two earned--on six hits while striking out six over 6-1/3 innings.

Biola got on the board first with a run in the third inning as Leon blasted a shot to left field to make it 1-0. Bethany answered back quickly with a run in the fourth on a Kenny Chadwick RBI double.

Biola responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame, the big blow being a two-run double by Farrington, who came around to score on a single by Leon.

After Bethany got a run back in the fifth, Biola broke the game open with five in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, the Eagles went on an extra-base-hit barrage, with Farrington driving in one with a triple followed by an RBI double by Leon. Fayard then collected his second home run of the season to make it a 9-2 game. Sullivan then followed that with a solo home run to make it 10-2.

Bethany tacked on one more in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles answered back with four in the bottom of the inning.

Kyle Atkins, Karl Stuck and Justin Rodriguez combined to pitch a perfect final 2-2/3 inning to wrap up the victory.

Biola returns to action on Friday (Feb. 19) hosting Madonna University (Mich.) in a non-conference doubleheader at Eagles Diamond. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
