Chris Baek

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior Chris Baek scattered two hits over eight innings and Biola's offense provided plenty of support as the Eagles easily dispatched for Bethany University 16-3 in a non-conference game on Monday at Eagles Diamond.

Biola improves to 4-0 on the season with Baek moving to 3-0 overall. The Bruins drop to 0-3.

Baek, who has started three of the Eagles' four games this year due to numerous rainouts, allowed just two runs on two hits over eight innings, dropping his ERA to 1.42 and collecting five strikeouts.

Biola pounded out 15 hits in the game with 13 of the 19 Eagle players with an at-bat collecting at least one hit. Sophomore Vinnie Fayard was one of just two players with two hits, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Junior Garrett Leon was the other Biola player with multiple hits, finishing the game going 2-for-5 with three runs scored.

Biola jumped out early with two runs in the first with Fayard driving in the first with an RBI single followed by another scoring on a groundout.

In the third, Fayard hit a two-out solo home run to stretch the lead, then Brent Opdyke added the fourth with an RBI-single through the right side to score Mac Sullivan.

Biola blew the game open with four runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter to load the bases with one out. After a pitching change, catcher Daniel Bodemer drive home the first two runs of the frame with a single to left. The Eagles then added two more on a two-RBI sacrifice fly by Christopher Neal who drove a deep shot into the right-field corner.

Meanwhile, Baek was cruising, facing the minimum through seven innings. After allowing a single with one out in the second, Biola caught the runner stealing second. In the third, a Biola error allowed another Bethany player to reach base, but Beak picked him off at second. In the sixth, Baek walked a batter with one out only to have Bodemer erase him from the books with a strong throw on a steal attempt.

In the eighth, Baek began to tire, allowing an infield single followed by a walk to start off the frame. After a double steal, the Bruins would score two runs on back-to-back infield ground outs. In the ninth, they added another run without a hit to account for their scoring.

As mentioned before, the Eagles received offensive contributions from just about everyone. In the seventh, back-up catcher Mike Lopez led off the inning with his first collegiate home run. Later in the inning Phillip Blazek tacked on two more with a two-run double down the left-field line.

In the eighth inning the Eagles kept the pressure on with four-straight singles. Josh Burket drove home a pair with a bases-loaded single to left, followed by an RBI single by Michael Andrews to cap the scoring for Biola.

The Eagles return to the field on Tuesday (Feb. 16) to face Bethany in the final game of the two-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
