Andrew Schroeder

EL CAJON, Calif. --- Unlike a number of other top GSAC schools, Biola had little trouble winning in El Cajon, easily beating San Diego Christian College 78-53 in a GSAC game at the Ryan Athletic Center on Saturday night.

The Eagles improve to 23-2 on the season with their third-straight win and stay in a tie with Concordia for the top-spot in the conference at 13-2. The Hawks fall to 5-20 overall and to 3-12 in the GSAC.

Senior guard Danny Campbell continued his hot play, scoring a team-high 18 points, hitting Biola's lone two three-pointers and adding a steal. Marlon King added 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting with five assists and a steal.

Junior center Andrew Schroeder had a perfect night, hitting 4-of-4 from the field and going 7-of-7 from the free throw line to finish with 15 points, adding three rebounds and a steal.

The Hawks had pulled off a number big upsets at home this season including beating two previously undefeated teams in Fresno Pacific and Concordia at the Ryan Athletic Center.

Biola had its second-best shooting night of the season, hitting 57 percent from the field including 63 percent shooting in the second half. The Eagles' defense limited the Hawks to just 36.7 percent shooting.

The teams battled back and forth through the first 10 minutes of the period. A three-pointer by Tyler Mutton pulled SDCC back to within four with 7:42 to go, but Biola responded with a 13-3 run the rest of the way and headed to the half leading 34-20.

In the second half, the Eagles opened with another 13-3 run to go up 47-23 and never looked back, leading by as many as 34 before settling for the 25-point victory.

Biola absolutely dominated in the paint, outscoring the Hawks 40-12 inside and outrebounding them 33-26. The Eagles also committed just eight turnovers in the game while forcing 15 by San Diego Christian.

The Hawks were led by Jason Starr, who recorded a game-high 21 points thanks to six three-pointers. The long-range shot was about all San Diego Christian had working in the game as the Hawks had 12 three-pointers in the game and just six two-pointers.

Biola returns to the court on Tuesday (Feb. 16), hosting GSAC rival Westmont College at 7:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
