Biola Downs Victoria 65-50 to Give Holmquist Win No. 799

Nate Rakestraw

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior guard Nate Rakestraw scored a game-high 15 points and was one of four players in double figures to lead Biola to a 65-50 victory over the University of Victoria and gave Head Coach Dave Holmquist win No. 799 on Tuesday at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles, ranked No. 18 in the latest NAIA National Rankings, improve to 11-1 on the season while the Vikes fall to 9-8.

Biola's victory gives Holmquist a 799-295 career record in 34 years of coaching and with a win on Wednesday against the University of the Fraser Valley, he could become the 16th coach in all divisions to win 800 games. The Eagles will look to get him that victory on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the non-conference game at Chase Gymnasium.

Biola overcame a slow start in the first half and dominated the second half to pull away and eventually win the game over the upset-minded Vikes. While the Eagles' shooting was not quite up to snuff on the night, the defense helped save the day as Victoria became the fourth-straight Biola opponent and eighth overall to be held to 50 points or less.

After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes, the Eagles slowly pulled away with a 13-2 run to go 29-16 with 8:32 to go in the first half. However, the Vikes would respond with an 11-2 run of their own to cut the lead down to four and trailed by just six at halftime.

In the second half, Biola quickly stretched the lead back to 13 by scoring the first seven points of the period. After Victoria narrowed the gap to eight, Biola used a 10-2 run to open its largest lead of the game at 57-41 with 5:58 to play. Victoria would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Rakestraw scored all of his points from beyond the arc, going 5-of-9 from long range and adding three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Dwight Gordon added 13 points and three assists while David Cline came off the bench to add 12 points and eight rebounds.

Michael Berg led the way for Victoria with 15 points.
