LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was the best of halves, it was the worst of halves. The tale of two halves ended up going the way of No. 18 Biola on Saturday night as the Eagles outscored Pacific Union College by 35 in the second half to win 78-40 in a non-conference game at Chase Gymnasium.
Biola improves to 10-1 with the victory while dropping the Pioneers to 1-9 on the season. The victory gives Biola Head Coach Dave Holmquist 798 wins in his illustrious career. He needs just two more wins to become the 16th coach in all divisions to reach 800 career victories.
The Dickens'-esque game started out with Biola playing its worst half of the season, opening by hitting just 5-of-16 from the field over the first 10 minutes. Meanwhile, Pacific Union began the game red-hot from the field, especially from three-point range. The Pioneers, who came into the game averaging just four-three pointers per game, connected on six from long-distance in the first half and raced out to an 14-7 lead.
Biola would eventually cut the lead down and tied the score at 19-19 with 6:20 to go in the period. Biola would take its first lead of the game with just under four minutes left in the half as
David Cline converted an old-fashioned three-point play.
In addition to taking the lead, it also began a long scoreless drought by the Pioneers, who went the next nine minutes without a point and went 14:11 with just two points. Over that same stretch, Biola would begin to figure things out.
The Eagles opened the second half on a 17-0 run with Cline scoring 12 of those points. While Pacific Union was having trouble finding the bottom of the basket, Biola would go on a 33-2 run over that 14:11 stretch to take a commanding 56-27 lead with 9:49 to go. The Eagles wound up outscoring the Pioneers 50-15 in the second half, shooting 61 percent from the field while holding Pacific Union to just 21 percent shooting.
Biola was led by Cline, who had a season-high 20 points, adding eight rebounds and hitting 9-of-14 from the field.
Elliot Tan scored 11 points thanks to three three-pointers, and contributed three steals.
Dwight Gordon added 10 points and four assists for the Eagles.
Biola feasted on Pacific Union miscues, converting 27 Pioneer turnovers into 41 points. The Eagles also scored 42 points in the paint while 21 of Pacific Union's 40 points came from three-point range.
Biola heads into Christmas Break with a 10-1 record, the second-straight season the Eagles have gone into Christmas with one or fewer losses. Biola returns to action with three games over the final week of 2010, hosting a trio of Canadian schools. The Eagles welcome the University of Victoria to Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday, Dec. 27, then face the University of Fraser Valley on Wednesday. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
