David Cline scored 22 points and added 10 rebounds and
Dwight Gordon added 17 points to help Biola hang on for an 82-75 victory over Holy Names University in a non-conference match at Tobin Gym in Oakland on Friday night.
The Eagles, ranked No. 16 in the preseason NAIA rankings, improve to 2-0 on the season with the victory. The Hawks drop to 0-2.
Cline had a strong night, going 8-for-12 with 10 rebounds including three on the offense glass for the first double-double of the season for Biola. Gordon scored in double-figures for the second-straight game, pouring in 17 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double.
The Eagles opened up a big lead in the first half, holding a 41-29 lead at the half. Biola quickly extended its lead to 22 at 62-40. However, the Hawks rallied late with a 17-2 run over a four-minute stretch to cut the lead to seven. The Eagles stretched the lead back up to 13 with a quick run including back-to-back buckets by Cline.
In the closing minutes, Holy Names would again cut the lead down, this time to five in the closing minutes. But strong defense and timely free throw shooting would help the Eagles hang on for the win.
The Hawks hung around in the game thanks to 11 three-pointers. They would shoot 45 percent in the game but struggled with 13 turnovers.
Biola shot just under 44 percent, recovering from a poor shooting first half with a 55 percent second half.
The Eagles take a bit of a break, returning to action on Wednesday, November 17, hosting the University of Redlands at 7:30 p.m.
