LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola sent off its six seniors with one of the biggest upsets in the conference this year, knocking off No. 4 The Master's College 2-1 in its season-finale on Saturday on Al Barbour Field.
The victory helps the Eagles wrap up the regular season with a 6-4-6 overall record and a 3-2-5 record in conference play. Biola, which had already clinched its first playoff berth in five seasons earlier this week, added icing to the cake by playing spoiler to the Mustangs, keeping them from the first GSAC Championship in program history with the victory. The loss drops The Master's to 15-2-1 on the season and to 8-2-0 in the conference, finishing second in the GSAC behind Azusa Pacific.
Brittany Barr got the Eagles on the board early in the contest, tapping home an open shot just nine minutes in.
Brianna Yarber started the play with a great run down the far side, sending a pass into the box which was headed by Morgan Gage on the far side of the net to Barr on the near side. She finished the wide-open shot with a quick kick to put Biola on top.
After relentless pressure the Mustangs finally recorded the equalizer in the 29th minute as Jasmine Benson recorded her first goal, tapping in a rebound off a blocked initial shot.
But Biola kept up the pressure and received a gift from The Master's as a Biola attacker was taken down in the box leading to a penalty kick. Senior
Caitlin Peterson took the spot kick and sent it past the keeper with a blast to the far corner.
From there, Biola's defense took over. The Eagles, who have an all-senior back line, stepped up and held the high-scoring Mustangs at bay the rest of the way. Despite peppering the Biola goal with 21 shots--21 in the second half, junior netminder
Erin Frushon came up huge, making nine saves on the day including five in the second half to preserve the big upset.
The victory was the second by the Eagles this season over a team ranked No. 4 in the NAIA. Earlier in the season, Biola knocked off then-No. 4 ranked Cal Baptist by a 2-1 count in overtime.
The Eagles get another chance to face Cal Baptist as the Lancers are Biola's quarterfinals opponent as the GSAC playoffs begin on Tuesday. The Eagles, who finish sixth in the GSAC after finishing no better than ninth in any of the previous five seasons, face Cal Baptist in the quarterfinals at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. The other first-round match-ups are No. 8 Fresno Pacific at No. 1 Azusa Pacific, No. 7 Westmont at No. 2 The Master's, and No. 5 Point Loma Nazarene at No. 4 Concordia.
