RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Senior forward
Rocky Hampton scored a game-high 19 points and Biola shot 63 percent from the field en route to a dominating 73-47 victory against California Baptist University in a GSAC game on Saturday night at Van Dyne Gymnasium in Riverside.
The Eagles improve to 18-1 overall with the victory and to 8-1 in GSAC play. The Lancers, who entered the game with an 8-1 record at home this season, fall to 12-7 and to 5-4 in conference action.
Hampton had a field day down low for Biola, going 9-of-11 from the field, adding nine rebounds two blocks and a steal. Senior guard
Danny Campbell added 17 points, missing just two shots as well, going 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Biola dominated the game from start to finish, hitting its first seven shots from the field and nine of its first 10 overall. The Eagles could have done a bit more with their hot start, but committed four turnovers over that stretch. However, the defense was on display and Biola would not allow an easy shot by Cal Baptist.
Biola would stretch its lead to 20 just 17 minutes into the game as
Josh Miller drained a three-pointer with 2:56 left to make it 35-15 and led 38-18 at the half. It was the second-fewest first-half points allowed by the Eagles this season as they shot 68.2 percent in the opening stanza while holding the Lancers to just 25 percent.
In the second, Biola did not let up on the peddle, stretching the lead to 25 just over eight minutes into the half and not looking back.
The Lancers, who typically shoot around 33 percent from three-point range, managed to hit just 5-of-29 from downtown (17.2 percent). They were just 1-of-14 in the first half. Biola, on the other hand, hit 5-of-7 in the first 20 minutes and finished the game at 50 percent (6-of-12).
Oddly enough, it was the second-straight game the Lancers were held to exactly 47 points as they fell 65-47 at The Master's on Saturday. Both were the second-lowest of the season behind a 40-point performance against Cal Maritime in mid-December.
Biola's defense continues to be the best in the NAIA as the Eagles are allowing just 57 points per game on average. California Baptist is the fifth opponent Biola has held under 50 points this season and the third GSAC opponent. Two of those have come on the road including Biola's 64-43 win at Westmont two weeks ago.
The Eagles return home to wrap up the first half of conference play on Tuesday (Jan. 26), hosting Hope International University in a GSAC battle at 7:30 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium.
