LA MIRADA, Calif. --- In what turned out to be a marathon afternoon Biola won two out of three games on Saturday against GSAC foe Concordia University at the Eagles Diamond.
The day started with a 10-8 win by Biola in the completion of a suspended game. That was followed by a 5-4 Biola win in the first game of the regularly-scheduled doubleheader. Concordia salvaged a victory on the day, winning the second game 4-2.
Biola moves to 28-19 overall and to 20-12 GSAC after the completion of the three games, though they had a six-game winning streak snapped after the finale. Concordia falls to 18-25 overall and to 13-19 in conference play.
Freshman Vinnie Fayard belted a two run homer in the top of the 12th inning to lift Biola 10-8 in the finish of a game that was suspended due to darkness on February 28th in Irvine. The game originally was scheduled for seven innings. Biola came from a two-run defict in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead only to see Concordia come back to tie it with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame. After the teams went through the ninth with no additional scoring, the game was suspended due to darkness.
Junior Billy Vopinek returned to the pitcher's mound in the bottom of the 12th to pick up his 14th save of the season.
Both clubs bounced back thirty minutes later to start the regularly scheduled double header with Biola using a two-run eighth to edge Concordia again, 5-4.
Biola opened the scoring with two runs in the second thanks to RBI singles by Chad Pace and Chris Foreman. The Eagles would plate one more run in the third to take a 3-0 lead as Gebbers belted his 11th home run of the season.
Concordia rallied back with a run in the fifth on a solo homer by Zach Barger, then tied the score with two in the sixth. The visitors would rally for the lead in the top of the seventh as Jimmy Mittleberger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Barger with the go-ahead run.
But Biola rallied back in the bottom of the eighth to take back the lead. Taylor Loop led off the frame with an infield single followed by a walk to Nick Rotkowitz. After a sacrifice bunt moved the two into scoring position, Pace drove home the tying run with a single into centerfield. Rotkowitz then came around to score as pinch-hitter Josh Burket reached on an error which gave Biola a 5-4 lead.
Vopinek was once again called upon to save the game, and retired the side in order for his 15th save of the season. He now stands just one shy of the Biola single-season saves record of 16 set in 2005 by Jonathan Grijalva.
Concordia was able to salvage the final game 4-2, thanks in large part to three home runs which accounted for all of its scoring. The big blow came off the bat of Mittleberger, who blasted a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Mittleberger was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate in the game.
Biola struck first in the game as Fayard drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.
Concordia quickly took the lead in the top of the third as Pete Lemone and Barger recorded back-to back solo shots.
Biola tied the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the third. Gebbers opened the inning with his second-straight double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an infield single.
For Biola it was Foreman, Gebbers and Fayard leading the offensive charge, as each collected at least one hit in each of the three games contested on the day.
The two wins move Biola into a tie for fourth place in the GSAC standings with The Master's College, just one game behind Fresno Pacific and Azusa Pacific, which are tied for second. Biola faces the two Pacifics this week, traveling to Fresno on Thursday (Apr. 23) and hosting a doubleheader against Azusa on Saturday (Apr. 25). The Eagles will head back to Fresno to wrap up the regular season on Tuesday (Apr. 28).
Biola plays its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday (Apr. 21), traveling to La Verne to face the University of La Verne at 2:00 p.m. before its final four games of the regular season.
