EL CAJON, Calif. --- Biola pounded out 22 runs on 24 hits over the course of 16 innings including two home runs and a triple by Brent Chavez in a GSAC doubleheader sweep over San Diego Christian on Monday, winning by scores of 17-5 and 5-1.
The Eagles improve to 25-18 on the season on the heels of their third-straight win and move to 16-11 in GSAC play. The victories move Biola to within 1-1/2 games of third in the conference standings behind The Master's College and Azusa Pacific. The Hawks fall to 11-28 and 2-26 in conference.
Biola opened up the day with a big 17-5 win. The Eagles opened the game with three runs in each of the first two innings. In the first, Biola scored three runs on just one hit, benefiting from three hit batters and a walk. The inning was capped by a two-run single by Hawkins Gebbers. In the second, Chavez had the big blow with a three-run home run to left to chase the Hawks' starter.
San Diego Christian pulled within two thanks to a pair of two-run innings in the third and the fourth. Biola starter Nate Coronado had a tough outing, allowing four earned in three innings. However, senior Brian Alberts came on in relief and shut down the Hawks. He allowed just four hits over the next four innings while striking out three.
Biola would blow the game wide open in the seventh with a six-run outburst. Taylor Loop drove home the first run of the inning with a single through the leftside. That was followed by a two-run double by Brent Opdyke and another by Gebbers.
In the eighth, the Eagles added four more runs as Chavez led off the inning with his second home run of the game. Gebbers picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a single to plate the second run followed by RBI doubles from Gil Banwart and Vinnie Fayard.
Albert picked up the win for the Eagles to improve to 3-8 on the season.
In the second game, Biola again jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first. Chris Foreman led off the game with a single up the middle and moved to second on a walk to Billy Vopinek. After a double steal moved the runners into scoring position, a sacrifice fly by Loop plated the first run.
The Hawks tied the game with a run in the third as Bryan Kobara led off the winning with a triple and came around to score on a wild pitch.
The two teams remained deadlocked until the Eagles scored two runs in the fifth. Vopinek led off the frame with a single and came around to score on a triple by Chavez. Loop then drove home the next run with his second sacrifice fly of the game. Biola added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh with two outs as Chad Pace and Josh Burket each collected RBI-singles.
Adam McNaught picked up the victory, his first as an Eagle, allowing just one run on four hits over five innings, adding seven strikeouts in the game. Steven Alexander picked up his third save of the season, pitching a perfect final two innings and collecting three strikeouts.
Biola returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 15) with the first game of a two-game series at Westmont College. Both games are set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
