LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite posting six runs, Biola fell short to Westmont in the second meeting between the teams in the last week, losing 10-6 to the Warriors in a GSAC game on Thursday afternoon..
Westmont centerfielder Taylor Maddox had a career day for the Warriors going 3-for-4 for 6 RBI including a three run triple in Westmont's four run seventh that proved to be the difference.
The win is just Westmont's (6-21, 4-14 GSAC) fourth conference victory although they have played most of the conference close. Biola drops to 14-13 overall and 7-7 in GSAC play.
Biola got the scoring started in the first when Senior
Chris Foreman got beaned to start the inning and amazingly went first and third on a groundout.
Nick Rotkowitz then grounded out to score Foreman for an early 1-0 Biola lead.
But Westmont showed immediately that they were going to be a tough opponent as the Warriors scored on Maddox's first RBI of the game followed by a two RBI double by Charles Whitman.
Biola answered back in the bottom of the second thanks to RBI singles by seniors
Chad Pace and
David West that tied the game at three.
Westmont regained the lead in the third when David Stout reached on an error, Mark Magdeleno singled, and Mark Boujikian singled home Stout. Maddoz picked up two more RBI with a clutch two out single to push the lead to three.
Biola was able to cut the deficit to one when
Brent Opdyke singled in
Brent Chavez and Bodemer nearly missed a grand slam, instead driving in
Hawkins Gebbers with a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles finally tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, when Bodemer connected for his first homer of the year over the left field fence.
But the Warriors took over from there with a four run seventh inning against three Biola relievers. Sam Wiley singled followed by two bunt singles by Magdeleno and Zeke Torres. With the bases loaded, Boujikian was beaned to force in a run. Maddox then iced the game one batter later with a three run double.
Neither starter made their way out of the third, with Bill Sharp (1-0) picking up the win for Westmont out of relief.
Calen Pennington (0-2) is tagged for the loss despite only allowing one earned run in 3.1 innings after putting the go ahead runner on in the seventh.
The Eagles will shift their focus to San Diego Christian, as Biola hosts the Hawks for a double dip on Saturday with game one's first pitch scheduled for Noon.
