LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A week and a day after Biola edged Cal State San Marcos at the Eagles Diamond, the Eagles did it again. This time Biola used seven hits including a three-run home run by senior
Hawkins Gebbers to push past the Cougars, 6-3.
The win bumps Biola to 14-12 overall, while Cal State San Marcos drops to 13-7.
Biola broke open the scoring in the third when Senior
Chris Foreman walked with one out. Senior third basemen
Brent Chavez then singled before both runners advanced on a groundout. That set the stage for Gebber's fifth home run of the year, a three run blast over the 345 ft. sign in left center field to give Biola the early 3-0 lead.
San Marcos answered back in the top of the fourth against Biola starter Bobby O'Neill. With two outs, the designated hitter Dane Ponciano drew a walk, Scott Clement singled, and Josh Miller singled to load the bases. Austin Coleman then delivered a two run single to pull the Cougars within one.
The Cougars were able to tie the game on a Ricardo Moran sacrifice fly in the fifth. However, Biola would do the rest of the scoring as Foreman ripped a triple into the right center field gap to start the bottom of the fifth and scored on a
Nick Rotkowitz single, a run that proved to be the game winner.
The Eagles added two more runs in the sixth when
Billy Vopinek walked and moved to third on a double by
Brent Opdyke before scoring on a
Chad Pace groundout. Opdyke was subsequently cashed in by another groundout by
David West.
From there, the Eagles bullpen slammed the door shut as freshman
Nick Woodward, senior
Charlie Gausepohl, junior
Steven Alexander, and the closer Vopinek pitched the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th respectively to preserve the win.
O'Neill (4-1) lasted a batter into the sixth and picked up his fourth win of the season.
Vopinek allowed three runner on in the ninth before navigating to another scoreless inning, picking up his ninth save on the year.
San Marcos starter Johnny Holtman (2-1) went six for the Cougars allowing all six of the Biola runs on six hits while striking out three. Biola returns to conference play on Thursday, (Mar. 19), hosting Westmont College at the Eagles Diamond at 3:00 p.m.
