BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Another day, another clutch two-out hit by Brent Chavez. The senior came up clutch for Biola for the second-straight day, helping the Eagles to another 5-4 win, this time over GSAC foe Westmont College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles improve to 12-11 overall and to 6-5 in GSAC play, marking the first time Biola has been over .500 in either one this season. The Warriors fall to 3-20 on the year and 2-13 in conference.

Chavez' two-out, RBI-single to left broke up a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth, capping a Biola comeback. The Eagles had trailed 4-0 after the fourth inning. Chavez' also drove in the winning runs with a two-out, two-run double in Tuesday's game against Cal State San Marcos, as the Eagles trailed 4-3 at the time.

Biola's Steven Alexander picked up the win in relief, allowing a single, but striking out the next three batters he faced in the top of the eighth. Junior Billy Vopinek came on in the ninth and picked up his seventh save of the season, though things got a bit dicey at the end. The Warriors put the tying run on base after a Biola error and--with two out--Vopinek walked a pair of batters to load the bases. But he got the Warriors' Sam Wiley to ground out the second on a full-count pitch to end the game.

The Warriors struck first with a run in the third on an RBI-double by Sam Wiley.

Biola had a chance in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with two out. Hawkins Gebbers put
a charge in the ball, driving it deep to left field, but the Westmont left fielder was able to make the catch at the fence to end the inning.

Westmont tacked on three runs in the fourth inning, all coming with two out. The Warriors put runners on the corners with two out with a pair of singles. They scored the first run on an errant throw to second by catcher Taylor Loop which allowed the runner from third to easily come home. That was followed by an RBI-double off the bat of Taylor Grace and an RBI-single by Jordan Bottenfield to make it 4-0.

Biola finally got things going in the fourth, tallying a run though it could have been worse. Loop led off the inning with a single and courtesy runner Chad Pace stole second. Pace then scored on a single to right centerfield off the bat of Brent Opdyke to make it 4-1. The Eagles loaded the bases as Billy Vopinek was hit by a pitch and Gil Banwart drew a walk all with just one out. Chris Foreman then drilled a shot down the first baseline only to see it snagged by the Westmont first baseman Mark Magdaleno, who easily doubled off Banwart to end the inning. It was the second such doubleplay turned by Magdaleno in the first four innings.

The Eagles tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Rotkowitz drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two out single by Loop. It appeared as though the Warriors would get out of the inning with no further damage, but a routine grounder to short skipped under the shortstop's glove extending the inning. Opdyke then made them pay with a clutch double to right-centerfield to clear the bases and tie the game.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Biola took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning. Vopinek led off the inning with a single and was lifted for a pinch-runner, Vinnie Fayard. With one out, Fayard was moved to second on an infield out by Foreman, then came around to score on Chavez' single.

Loop and Opdyke each finished the game going 2-for-4, Opdyke recording three RBIs.

Wiley paced the Warriors with a 3-for-5 performance while Jordan Bottenfield added a pair of hits in four at-bats.

Biola starter Bobby O'Neill had an rough outing, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings. He also had four wild pitches in the game. The sophomore, who received a no-decision, had won his previous three outings, allowing just three earned runs on 12 hits over his last 13-1/3 innings.

Senior righthander Charlie Gausepohl came on in relief and allowed just one hit over the next two-plus innings, striking out three to keep Westmont off the board.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday (Mar. 14), traveling to Azusa to take on arch-rival Azusa Pacific University in a GSAC doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
