HILO, Hawaii --- Senior Hawkins Gebbers went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs as Biola picked up its first win of the season in its final game in Hawaii, defeating Hawaii-Hilo 10-5. The second game of the planned doubleheader was rained out.
The Eagles improve to 1-5 on the season, snapping its worst season-opening losing streak since the 1984 season. The Vulcans dropped to 0-1.
In the first game, Biola jumped out to an early lead as Vinnie Fayard reached on a one-out double, then came around to score on a single by Gebbers.
The lead was short-lived, though, with two runs in the bottom of the second. But the Eagles came back with a pair of runs in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI singles by Brent Chavez and David West. Biola tacked on on three more runs in the top of the fourth inning on a three-run blast by Gebbers which made it 6-2.
The Vulcans again struck back quickly with three unearned runs in the bottom of fourth to pull within one at 6-5. But, Biola scored a pair of insurance runs without a hit in the top of the sixth, then added two more in the seventh capped by an RBI single by Rotkowitz.
Starting pitcher Charlie Gausepohl allowed just two earned runs on four hits over three innings in his first start of the season. Relief pitcher Nick Woodward picked up the win in relief, allowing just one his in 1-1/3 innings. Billy Vopinek earned the save for the Eagles, allowing just one his over the final 1-1/3 innings.
Biola returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 7), opening GSAC play with a trip to El Cajon to take on San Diego Christian in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
