BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite holding Concordia to its lowest point total in nearly two seasons, Biola was unable to pull off the upset, falling to Concordia 54-47 in a GSAC game played before 1,841 fans at Chase Gymnasium on Saturday night.
Biola drops to 18-7 on the season and to 9-6 in conference play, losing its third-straight home game despite riding a five-game winning streak on the road. Concordia, which entered the game ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, picks up its eighth win in a row and improves to 22-5 and stands at 13-4 in the GSAC.
Junior guard Danny Campbell paced Biola with 13 points and added five rebounds with junior forward Rocky Hampton and sophomore forward Josh Miller contributing 12 points apiece.
Biola got off to a great start, shooting 67 percent in the first half and taking a 12-point lead to the locker room after holding the third-highest scoring team in the conference to just 19 points in the first half. The home team scored the first seven points of the game and did not allow Concordia to get any closer than four through the first 20 minutes of play.
However, the wheels came off in the second half for Biola. After an incredible shooting half in the first half, Biola managed to shoot just 29 percent in the second and turned the ball over 14 times in the final 20 minutes.
After Concordia recorded the first bucket of the second half, Biola came back down and scored on back-to-back possessions to take its biggest lead of the game at 35-21 with 15:50 to go. But Biola's offense went ice cold as Concordia went on a 10-2 run over the next six minutes to pull within three at 37-34.
Things started looking a bit better for Biola as Miller and Campbell hit three-pointers on the next two possessions, stretching the lead back to nine at 43-34 with 7:58 still left. Biola still led by five with 5:25 to play, but Concordia's Cameron Gliddon and Kinglsey Constain drained back-to-back three-pointers, the second of which gave Concordia its first lead of the game at 46-45 with 2:15 to play.
Concordia's Terrance Worthy picked the pocket of Nate Rakestraw on Biola's next possession and took it coast-to-coast for the easy layup to make it a three-point lead for CUI. Worthy, who was fouled on the play, missed the free throw and the ensuing putback attempt giving Biola some life. Junior guard Marlon King pulled Biola back within one on the next trip down the court, making the score 48-47 in favor of Concordia with 1:05 to go.
However, after running the clock down to under 30 seconds left, Concordia plunged the dagger into the heart as Constain--who's game-high 16 points all came in the second half--drained a stepback three to ice the game.
In addition to the poor shooting, turnovers cost Biola in the second half. BU committed 14 of its 21 turnovers in the final 20 minutes of the contest which allowed Concordia to record 18 of its 35 second-half points on Biola miscues.
Compounding matters for Biola was the fact the team did not convert on any of its five free throw attempts in the game. It was the first time Biola failed to record a free throw in a game since Jan. 21, 2006 when the Eagles went 0-for-5 from the charity stripe against Concordia. Biola ultimately won that game by a score of 74-61.
Biola looks to rebound from this loss when it returns to the court on Tuesday (Feb. 24), hosting The Master's College in a GSAC game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
